2 What does the grading mean?
Possible outcomes from inspection: Outstanding – the school is exceptional. Good – the school is providing a good standard of education in all areas. Requires improvement - the school requires improvement in a few key areas, and the leadership of the school is judged to be capable of bringing about these improvements.

3 What does the grading mean?
Inadequate – serious weaknesses– the school has many serious weaknesses, but the leadership is capable of making swift improvement in these areas with a little extra outside help. Inadequate – special measures– the school is failing to provide an acceptable standard of education in many areas and OFSTED judge that the leadership are not capable of making these improvements without outside help . .

4 What were the main areas requiring improvement?
Look at the RAG sheet on your tables. Progress – stated in many ways! Pride in work Writing – spelling, punctuation, grammar Maths – higher expectations

5 And the strengths? Recent actions – eg Mission Shaw, Writing Planets
Early Years Behaviour, care and consideration and politeness. Teaching better in some classes as it leads to more rapid progress for those children.

6 What have we done? Improvements began the day after OFSTED – have not waited until now! Published report with covering letter. Begun our Action Planning – to be finalised by Governors immediately after this meeting. Invite you here this evening. Some apologies to set the scene.

7 To what extent does the report reflect your own and your child’s experience of Shaw School?
Discuss on your tables for a couple of minutes.

8 Some context “However, the impact, particularly on the most able disadvantaged pupils is variable….” “Personal development, behaviour and welfare requires improvement.”

9 What specifically have we been told to improve?
Improve progress in writing and maths by: Raising teacher expectations Challenging children to do their best Ensuring learning is always checked and work is always appropriate Children improving their own presentation and accuracy – inc spelling and grammar Providing opportunities for deeper maths learning

10 Increase impact of leadership and management by:
More rigorous evaluation of teaching, learning and assessment to drive improvement. Holding teachers to account for progress of children. Ensuring governors have precise progress information to ensure they hold leaders to account.

11 So what? What is the school doing to address the key issues?
Whatever we do will be done in a way that keeps children at the heart of all we do and ensures Shaw retains what makes it a popular and special school.

12 HOWEVER! We have been set targets by OFSTED and they will judge the school next time on our progress on those targets. Ignoring any of their report is not an option whether we believe it to be true, false, harsh or lenient!

13 Some key improvement strategies
We have a 22 page action plan which is nearing its final draft. It will be shared on the Shaw website on our OFSTED tab. We are going to highlight a few of the key strategies and then give you plenty of time for discussion on your tables and questions.

14 Raising expectations of pupils, challenging them to do their best, checking learning for all abilities, improving presentation. Traffic light cups. Marking boxes. Presentation examples. Clear expectations – Shaw Writing Planets New Spelling scheme with tracking Workspace

15 Mathematical understanding and reasoning.
Brand new nationally trialled curriculum based on problem solving and reasoning to be introduced from September. Significant staff training in stretching more able mathematicians.

16 Evaluation of teaching and learning and assessment
New data sheets to track children’s progress. New formats for book scrutiny, lesson observations and Pupil progress meetings. All of these focus on the impact of teaching on pupil progress from starting points.

17 Precise information for governors on progress of groups.
All of the above will provide Governors with a wealth of pupil progress data for their analysis, comment and challenge!

Use the post-it notes to make any comments or raise any questions. Please bring these to the front as soon as they are written and we will try to group them so that we can answer popular and similar questions together. We will select a sample to talk about.
