4 Our vision for discovery
Make digital and analogue resources easily discoverable on the Web Provide a richer search experience Explore content in new ways Make connections between resources John Dee was an English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, occult philosopher, imperialist, and adviser to Queen Elizabeth I. He devoted much of his life to the study of alchemy, divination, and Hermetic philosophy - Wikipedia Image 1: John Dee performing an experiment before Queen Elizabeth I. Oil painting by Henry Gillard Glindoni. Image 2: Practica et accurtaciones Georgii Ryplay et Raimundi. In English and Latin, written in the hand of John Dee.

5 Why linked open data? Known to have been used successfully elsewhere
Felt to be the right technology choice Fits with the ambition to make metadata openly available Provides the opportunity to learn and gain experience with a new technology

6 First steps Built web pages Attended internal and external workshops
Enrolled for online courses Brought in consultants Liaised with other libraries Participated in metadata initiatives, e.g. Libhub

7 How we prepared our records for RDA
RDA features are added to AACR2 records to create hybrid records 336 Content type 337 Media type 338 Carrier type Spelled out words in 300

8 How we prepared our records for linked data
Library of Congress authority record control numbers are added to $0 in name and subject headings in bibliographic records LC, ISNI, VIAF and ORCID URIs are added to local fields in authority records

9 User stories As [a type of user/role] I want [a service or feature]
So I can [achieve this goal] As a user I want to understand the context of what is being displayed to me, e.g. Francis Crick archive gives me a short bio to make sense of the material As a researcher I want to be able to find digitised resources in a search engine hit list and get to them easily so that I can do the maximum amount of research at my own desk As a supporter of open digitised content I want to ensure that a bib record for a non-digitised item links to the digitised version (where that exists) so that the maximum possible use is made of our digitised content (thus justifying our continuing investment in this activity) As a developer I want easy access to authorities/IDs so I can show/build a page about a person or subject I want there to be links between the Wellcome catalogue and other catalogues so that when I am in the Wellcome catalogue, I am referred to relevant material elsewhere

10 Data models

11 How we are harmonising our metadata
Use shared metadata standards where possible Use shared vocabularies Cleanse metadata using Open Refine Apply authority control (outsource if necessary) Add identifiers!

12 Thank you
