Welcome and staff introductions

2 Literacy Council of Montgomery County
Helps adults to read, write and speak English Tutoring and classes Nearly 1,400 people last year alone! Our classes are good for everyone! The Literacy Council of Montgomery County does one thing, and that is to help adults to read, write, speak and understand English. The Literacy Council helps adults to learn English by tutoring students – one teacher, one student – as well as offering classes Last year we help almost 1,400 people from the United States and other countries learn to read, write and speak English

3 ESL Class Program FREE Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes
15 to 20 students per class Teachers and Teaching Assistants to help students Become successful in the workplace, in the community

4 Gaithersburg Library, Gilchrist Center evening classes
Classes Meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday Class Times 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Class Starts January 20,2016 Class Ends April 6,2016

5 Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
Rockville High School Classes Meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday Class Times 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Class Starts February 11,2016 Class Ends April 28,2016

6 Gaithersburg Library, Gilchrist Center morning classes
Classes Meet Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Class Times 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Class Starts January 19, 2016 Class Ends March 17, 2016 Site specific- just show the site students are having orientation

7 Watkins Mill High School
Classes Meet Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Class Times 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Class Starts January 26, 2016 Class Ends April 12,2016

8 Silver Spring International Middle School
Classes Meet Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Class Times 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Class Starts Monday, February 2, 2016 Class Ends April 19,2016 For Up-county Regional Services Center only

10 You should buy your books
- study at home - do your homework Cost about $40 to $45 However, we STRONGLY encourage our students to buy the books so they can write in them and study at home [Show and pass around book sample] show that it’s really 2 books and a CD These are some of the books used in our classes. They cost about $40 to $45

11 When you finish class, you will receive a certificate !!!

12 Problem with work, childcare, vacation, travel or visa…
best to not take these classes now more classes in the future may leave now or at the break Our program may not be best for you at this time. Please give this opportunity to another student. We will have more classes in the future. You may leave now or at the break

13 Today/Tonight ‘Tests’ 2 listening tests and a very short writing test
to help us determine your level and the right class for you! No one passes!! No one fails!! Do your best!! There are six levels of English class - very high, very low and some in the middle. We will give tests to help us determine your level so that we know how to best help you And it is okay if you don’t finish or do not answer all of the questions. No need to guess. The first test is listening test. Then there is a very short writing test. Then another listening test. Some of you will take that test in this room. Some of you may go to another room for that test. Remember the test will help us help you with the right class level Do your best! No need to cheat or guess!

14 Next Steps after taking tests
green postcard= Come to class yellow postcard= Waitlisted blue postcard= tutor with the Literacy Council another program (e.g. Montgomery College) Some of you will be sent an , or receive a telephone call or receive a green postcard [show green sample] to let you know to report to class.

15 VERY IMPORTANT!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!
If you do not come to the first 2 classes, you will lose your place (“seat”). BUT if you receive a green postcard BUT do not come to the first 2 classes, BOTH CLASSES, you will lose your seat or place in the class. We will contact others to become students in the class. [repeat this point]

18 Why do you want to learn English??
For LEF , Second page

19 For Your Education Some students want to learn English because knowing English will help them with their education. Some want to go to university or a vocational school to study, for example, computers, nursing or medicine

20 To help my family Others want to learn English to read a book to their child, help them with their homework or talk to the child’s teacher

21 Economic – Better Job?? Others may want to learn English so that they can get a better job, have a different career and earn more money

22 U.S. Citizenship? Others want to become a US citizenship, and will need to know English in order to do so.

23 Daily Life?? In daily life, some want to learn English so they can talk to their doctor or nurse, go to the grocery store and read food labels, ask for information or maybe talk to a bank teller.
