1 World Day against Child Labour

2 On this World Day we call for:
Renewed urgency to tackle the worst forms of child labour Making attention to child labour part of poverty reduction, education and social protection strategies Building political commitment to tackling child labour, with social partners and civil society playing a leading role in advocacy efforts

3 Tackling the Worst Forms of Child Labour
It is ten years since the coming into force of the ILO’s Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour Millions of child labourers have benefited from the Convention, but much remains to be done The ILO’s member states have set the target for eliminating the WFCL by 2016 To achieve this goal requires a major scaling up of effort and commitment

4 The latest figures… 215 million children are trapped in child labour
115 million of these children are in hazardous work

5 The regional child labour picture
Africa – 1 child in 4 Asia – 1 child in 8 Latin America-1 child in 10

6 The Hague Conference In May 2010 representatives of eighty countries met in the Hague A Roadmap of Action was agreed upon The follow-up to the Global Conference will provide an opportunity for countries to assess the progress made, and what more needs to be done.

7 Scaling up efforts through poverty reduction and decent work
Much child labour is rooted in poverty Child labour perpetuates a cycle of poverty that prevents families and nations from reaching their full potential We need to tackle family poverty and break the cycle Ensuring that adults have employment and decent work is vital

8 Access to basic education
72 million primary aged children are not enrolled in school 71 million children of junior secondary school age not enrolled in school Many children who are enrolled are not attending on a regular basis We need a new commitment to education for all children to the minimum age of employment We must tackle the barriers and improve the access and quality of education

9 Scaling up social protection
There need to be essential social services for all (e.g education, health) Social protection strategies which assist poor families to access essential services (e.g cash transfer programmes to the poor, school feeding)

10 Building support for tackling child labour
Governments must take a lead Employers’ and workers’ organisations can be strong advocates Civil society organisations can also play an important role Pilot programmes to tackle child labour can show the way forward
