Strengthening Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Sexual and Gender Based Violence Services for Syrian and Other Refugees thru Women and Girl Safe Spaces (WGSS)/Women Health Counselling Units Project Türküler ERDOST Hacettepe University Research and Implementation Center on Women’s Issues (HUWRIC)

2 Every Help Saves A Family

3 Current Situation According to latest data of The UN Refugee Agency,
close to 3 million Syrians are in Turkey in the status of temporary protection. In this context, 73.597 Syrian migrant population are living in Ankara ( ) Most of this population consists of women and children.

4 Why Women? Women carry double burden both as being a migrant and as a woman (UNFPA,2006). Women are in a more disadvantaged position due to gender discrimination (gender influences negatively various aspects of life such as education, health status, employment etc.) (WHO, 2003). Women are more at risk of physical/sexual violence and abuse before, during and after migration (IOM, 2005).

5

6 One of the most important factors that has negative impact on migrant women’s psychological health is «Gender Based Violence» Migrant women are subjected to physical abuse and violence more on the streets and outside of home because they are seen powerless with regard to their gender in addition to their ethnicity. Studies demonstrate that, women are exposed to more physical violence from their husbands after migration. (Study of Violence against Women in Germany, 2004; Hass, 2006).

7 One of the most important factors that has negative impact on migrant women’s psychological health is «Gender Based Violence» continuing… Migrant women who have violence experience; Don’t know their legal rights and to which institution they could apply. They have language problems and most of them are not employed (They are economically powerless as well). They face with cultural and social isolation. (They are deprived of social support networks.) They don’t make contact with law enforcement officers (police) and other support mechanisms because they get affraid of being dismissed from the country. They have problems in reaching social services, health care services, residential/housing facilities and education.

28 From in-depth interviews conducted with women…
«When I first came to the Center, I was so embarrassed and I stayed outside. I had nothing to do outside, but I stayed there (laughing). I came in, checked in, joked with the social worker and then I felt as if we have been knowing each other since many years. After I came to the Center, I started socializing with people a little bit.» «My children are still afraid of everything. When they hear something outside, they suddenly come and embrace me. However, they are getting better day by day as they are going to school and they feel relieved gradually.»

29 I hope that we will have an honorable, equal, free and peaceful future… Thank You…
