5 How do animal systems interact to defend the body? Standard
PG 34 Essential Question   How do animal systems interact to defend the body? Standard B.10A - describe the interactions that occur among systems that perform the functions of regulation, nutrient absorption, reproduction, and defense from injury or illness in animals

6 SYSTEMS INVOLVED ILLNESS Circulatory Integumentary Immune
(1st line of defense) Immune (2nd line of defense) Circulatory

7 INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Main Parts: Skin Hair Nails Sweat and Oil glands

8 INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Main Functions: Holds in water
Keeps out foreign objects Helps control body temperature

9 The Integumentary system acts as a wall or barrier to any outside threats!

10 Occasionally threats make it past the wall…

11 Functions of the Integumentary System (skin)
Protection First line of defense against Bacteria Viruses Protects underlying structures from Ultraviolet (UV) radiation Dehydration Body temperature regulation If too hot Dermal blood vessels dilate Vessels carry more blood to surface so heat can escape If too cold Dermal blood vessels constrict Prevents heat from escaping

12 Functions of the Integumentary System (cont.)
Vitamin D production Needed for calcium absorption Sensation Sensory receptors (nerves) Excretion Small amounts of waste products are lost through perspiration (sweat)

13 IMMUNE SYSTEM Main Parts: Antibodies (protective proteins)
T-cells (White Blood Cells) B-cells (White Blood Cells)

14 IMMUNE SYSTEM Main Functions:
B-cells produce antibodies that attack pathogens (foreign invaders) in the blood T-cells attack invaded body cells Each B-cell, T-cell, and antibody is specific to what it attacks

15 B-Cells, Antibodies and T-cells are the soldiers that fight infections if they get past the wall…

16 Vaccinations Immune system exposed to harmless version of pathogen
stimulates B cell system to produce antibodies to pathogen “active immunity” rapid response on future exposure creates immunity without getting disease! Most successful against viruses

17 Immune System Malfunctions
Auto-immune diseases immune system attacks own molecules & cells lupus rheumatoid arthritis diabetes multiple sclerosis Allergies over-reaction to environmental antigens allergens = proteins on pollen, dust mites, in animal saliva stimulates release of histamine

18 CIRCULATORY SYSTEM RECAP
Main Parts: Blood vessels Heart Red & White blood cells (includes B- and T-cells)

19 CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Main Functions:
Transports antibodies & white blood cells Transports toxins and waste products to be removed

20

21 ALLERGIC REACTIONS are your body overreacting to harmless substances.

22 DEBRIEF: Quickwrite in Bellwork Journal: Explain how all three systems (Integumentary, Immune, and Circulatory) work together for defense in the body.
