Campus Waste Guide

Unwanted items on campus?
We've got garbage cans, but what about the stuff that doesn't need to or can't get thrown away in the regular trash? Here are some of the different kinds of waste disposal available on and utilized by campus!

Battery Disposal Batteries can't be thrown away with your normal trash! Because of this, campus has provided its students and faculty with a battery recycling bin located next the Pioneer Perk in the Markee Pioneer Student Center!

Ink Cartridge and Computer Toner Disposal
Ink cartridges can be recycled in the Markee Pioneer Student Center; there is a collection bin located next to the University Bookstore. Cartridges can also be sent through campus mail to the Sustainability Office, 308 Royce and they will be shipped off for recycling.

Electronics Disposal Unwanted TV’s, monitors, microwaves, refrigerators, sound equipment, computers, phones, printers, camera’s, etc. that are campus owned or if you live in campus housing (no off-campus items) submit the item(s) to Pioneer Restore.

Compost Organic waste (food/yard waste) can easily be turned into compost (a high-value fertilizer) in about four months' time. Because landfills lack access to oxygen and microbes, the same products take significantly longer to break down in a landfill, and may never completely do so. Bridgeway Commons, the Crossing, and Catering Services all participate in composting on campus, and there are compost bins available around campus for students to put their food waste as well!

Recycling Recycling helps save resources by giving products a second life, prevents harmful contaminants from entering our soil through landfills, creates jobs, and saves the university money (recycling costs less than landfilling). UW-Platteville (and all Platteville households) use single-stream recycling meaning all recycling can be mixed together in a single recycling bin.

Surplus/Restore Campus-owned items that are no longer needed, but still have resale value are sold through our campus surplus store, Pioneer Restore. Pioneer Restore's physical storefront is open to the public every Tuesday, noon – 5:00 p.m. They have a diverse inventory- from furniture, to unique equipment, you never know what you will find!

Special/Hazardous If you have a special/hazardous item that you purchased with your own money, you should call Faherty, Inc. at (608) They can take most universal waste for a fee and if they are unable to accept an item they can likely refer you to place that will accept it.  Aerosol cans Paint Sharps (needles, razors, etc.) Unwanted chemicals Used Oil/Antifreeze Waste solvents
