Why is Pollution Bad for the Earth? By: Adam Ferchen&Brad Fleming
What is pollution?Pollution is contamination by a chemical or other agent that renders part of the environment unfit for intended or desired use. These uses also and very importantly include all wildlife and ecological requirements to sustain life in all its natural forms.
There are different kinds of Pollution Air PollutionWater PollutionNoise PollutionLand PollutionAnd many others!
Air pollution is the modification of the natural characteristics of the atmosphere by a chemical, particulate matter, or biological agent. The atmosphere is a complex, dynamic natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on planet Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletion due to air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human health as well as to the Earth ecosystems.Air Pollution
Causes of Air Pollution Indoors: poor ventilation, products in aerosol cans, cigarette smoke, paintOutdoor: Factories, automotives, smoking, littering, burning waste in backyards
How to Reduce Air Pollution Modify transportation (carpool, walk, ride a bike)Conserve energyReduce wasteDon’t burn wasteQuit smokingPlant treesAvoid using toxic chemicals and aerosol cans
Water PollutionWater pollution is a large set of adverse effects upon water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and ground water caused by human activities.
Causes of water Pollution Throwing garbage into bodies of waterThrowing low batteries into bodies of waterThe chemicals from factories that might flow to rivers.
How to Reduce Water Pollution Maintain your vehicle from leaksMinimize fertilizers and pesticidesProperly dispose of trashProperly store chemicals
Noise PollutionNoise pollution or environmental noise is displeasing human or machine created sound that disrupts the activity or happiness of human or animal life.
Types of noise pollution TrafficAirportsRailroadsManufacturing plantsConstruction or demolitionConcerts
How to Reduce Noise Pollution Use double paned windowsAvoid loud noise areasTurn off TVUse “white noise” to cover unwanted sounds
Waste or soil pollution is contamination of the soil that prevents natural growth and balance in the land whether it is used for cultivation, habitation, or a wildlife preserve. Some soil pollution, such as the creation of landfills, is deliberate, while much more is accidental and can have widespread effects.Waste Pollution
Causes of Waste Pollution Hazardous waste and sewage spillsNon-sustainable farming practices, such as the heavy use of inorganic pesticidesStrip mining, deforestation, and other destructive practicesHousehold dumping and littering
How to Reduce Waste Pollution Don’t litterReduce wasteRecycleDon’t purchase products that come with a lot of disposable partsProperly dispose of toxic wastes
Why is it bad?Pollution damages the Earths land, water, and air. This leads to a contamination of the Earths environment. When this happens pollution then interferes with human health, the quality of life, and the natural functioning of ecosystems. It is also said to be the cause of Global Warming
