Year 2 – Extending Patient Contact Central Teaching with GP involvement

3 Overview of Year 3 Teaching
Three terms of nine weeks in Year 3. One module per term: (Met 3A) Surgery, Gastro & Oncology (Met 3B) Renal & Endocrine (1 week Breast & 1 week Urology teaching during the term) ENT (CR3) Cardiorespiratory and Haematology Students rotate around-also end of term ICA.

4 Overview of Year 3 GP Teaching
Met 3A 4 days over 1 week allocated to GP 2 days GP (either Mon/Tues or Thurs/Fri) 1 day District Nurses, 1 day central teaching GP3 1 day a week for 7-9 weeks in Met 3B term Incorporates both CR3 and Met 3B themes

5 Rationale for Change Students asking for longer blocks in GP.
Move towards integrated learning across systems. Opportunity for MDT experience & introduction to multimorbidity. Parity of experience for students. Overall increase in GP time in curriculum.

Taking Histories Examining Patients Clinical Skills Observing and Observed clinics Specialist Nurse Clinics Other MDT Working Opportunities for Audit

8 GP3 Assessment Attendance and Professionalism
Logbook sign-offs of Hx, Ex, Clinical Skills Logbook continuity exercise Met 3B PBLs on haematuria & diabetes with logbook sign-off SSC3a can be done in Primary Care Note ICA for each term based on lecture week

9 MA3 Teaching Themes Surgery including vascular Gastroenterology Cancer
Palliative Care (note a half day in hospice) All ‘inner’ placements are 2 days GP, 2DN 1 central. All resources on QMPlus for others.

13 Student Feedback on ‘Good’ Teaching
Students allowed to see patients on their own, then go with patient to see GP and present their findings and suggest how to manage patient. Students given logins to computer system and encouraged to use computer system to make notes and retrieve information when interviewing patients. Students encouraged to carry out examinations and then doctors carried out same examination to confirm findings and help guide students in what to look and listen for. Tutorials run by GP where diagnosis, investigation and management of important conditions is explored. Going on home visits with GP.
