1 Planet eStream: A new way to view curriculum-related audio-visual recordings at Calderdale College Welcome, my name is Andy and I am the Audio-Visual Librarian based in the Learning Resources Centres.

2 Today we will be covering …
Audio-visual services in general. Planet eStream in particular. In this session I will be covering the LRC’s audio-visual services in general and the new Planet eStream system in particular.

3 My role as the Audio-Visual Librarian
Selecting and recording curriculum-related recordings. Some of these are commercially-produced, but most are recorded from Terrestrial and Freeview television channels under the terms of the ERA License. Making these recordings available to staff and students. Via Planet eStream and the video and DVD Collections in the LRCs. The ERA License does not cover any other channels (Satellite channels etc).

4 Selection of recordings
Curriculum-related programmes are selected from Radio Times weekly and these selections are ed to tutors via the ‘All lecturers’ distribution list in Outlook. Requests in response to this are welcomed, as are requests for programmes not initially selected. Publishers catalogues (paper and online) of commercially-produced recordings are sent to relevant members of staff as they are received. If you are not receiving these s please ask TSU to add you to the ‘All Lecturers’ distribution list in Outlook. All requests are recorded and I will always you when the programmes are available. Requests to purchase commercially-produced recordings are welcomed, but are subject to approval from Katie Ponting , the Library Supervisor and budget holder for the library.

5 Accessing recordings In the past recordings have been made available on video and DVD. A large number of DVDs and a small number of videos are available to borrow from the LRCs New recordings (from Sept 2010) are made available through Planet eStream.

6 Planet eStream: an introduction
Planet eStream is a growing online database of curriculum-related programmes (currently over 2,500 programmes). Programmes are recorded directly into the database so they are available a short time after broadcast. It can be accessed from any Internet-connected PC both at college and away from college by any current student or member of staff. No additional software is required (programmes are viewed within Planet eStream) but headphones or speakers are required to be able to listen. Programmes can therefore be viewed individually through single PCs or shown to a group using a Smart Board and projector.

7 How to access Planet eStream
Use the following direct URL: Use the link on the Audio-Visual Resources and Services page on Moodle. At college you will be automatically logged on to the system. Off-site you need to log on using your staff/student username and password. Explain and demonstrate how to access Planet eStream using: Direct URL Link on the AV page on Moodle.

8 Finding programmes on Planet eStream
Use the search facility within Planet eStream itself. Search for Planet eStream programmes using the online library catalogue. Available from any Internet-connected PC using the following URL: In Planet eStream: explain and demonstrate: Planet eStream homepage (including recently added, etc) How to use search facility Results screen and how to access a particular programme. The information on the programme screen (including series, related links) How to view the programme (including different facilities such as volume, slider bar, subtitles, etc) Favourites facility How to use Show filter (including dates) How to search subtitles How Subjects work (including access, searching and hyper links shown in results pages) On online library catalogue: explain and demonstrate How all programmes are catalogued and can be found on the library catalogue (please note that although Planet eStream programmes can be found and viewed on Planet eStream shortly after broadcast, there is a delay before they are added to the catalogue. This is because I need to sit and watch the programmes to be able to write the description of the programme and to allocate Keywords (subject areas). I aim to do this as quickly as possible, but due to my workload it can take a bit longer) How to find Planet eStream recordings on Heritage Online (using general and advanced searches) Catalogue records (including direct link to Planet eStream) How Heritage Online can be accessed at college and off-site.

9 Linking to & embedding Planet eStream programmes
Individual programmes can be linked to, and embedded in Moodle. Subjects categories and sub-categories can also be linked to and embedded in Moodle. Demonstrate: How to link to individual programmes in Moodle (using URL)/ How to embed programmes in Moodle. How to link to subject categories and sub-categories in Moodle. How to embed subject categories and sub-categories in Moodle.

10 Copying to and from Planet eStream
Programmes recorded from Terrestrial and Freeview television channels can be uploaded to Planet eStream on request. Commercially-produced recordings would require copyright permission. Programmes recorded to Planet eStream can be copied to DVD on request.

11 New programmes A PDF document containing details of all new programmes recorded to Planet eStream (or DVD) is published on a bi-monthly basis. This document is available on the Audio-Visual Resources and Services page on Moodle. The document is also ed to tutors via the ‘All lecturers’ distribution list in Outlook.

12 Copying service Requests for copies of programmes/recordings are welcomed. It is possible to copy from: Planet eStream to DVD & DVD to Planet eStream DVD to DVD Video to DVD Camcorder/Flip/Bloggie o DVD & camcorder/Flip/Bloggie to Planet eStream Camcorder recordings uploaded to Planet eStream include the Dance Show for 2010.

13 Copying service (continued)
Audio recordings can also be made. It is possible to copy from: CD-ROM to CD-ROM Audio-cassette to CD-ROM The copying service is free. The only charge is for the blank DVD or CD-ROM. Copying is completely free if you provide your own blank disc.

14 Copyright All recording and copying is subject to copyright.
The ERA License permits the recording and copying of programmes broadcast on Terrestrial and Freeview television channels for educational purposes (excluding catch-up services such as BBC iPlayer and 4oD). Commercially-produced recordings can be copied but only when permission is granted by the copyright holder. The ERA License has recently changed its conditions to allow the access and recording of programme BBC iPlayer and 4oD. However the process of download these programme is illegal, so the offer is an empty one. BBC iPlayer and 4oD programmes can be shown directly from their Web sites, but cannot be copied to Planet eStream or DVD. Repeats can be recorded, but only when broadcast on normal television. I will contact copyright holders on your behalf, but the decision is with them – sometimes they will grant permission, sometimes they will refuse.
