1 Production of Topographic data products
In National Land Survey Teija Tarvainen Aalto yliopisto

2 Contents What are the products and goals of delivery
Production processes for different products The delivery of products

3 The Products Aerial Photographs and orthophotos
Laser scanning data and elevation models (2 and 10 m grid) Topographic database Small scale databases (1: , 1: , …1:4,5 mill.) Raster maps Topographic maps Background maps

4 The goals of delivery To deliver as much data as possible – open data in use To deliver as up-to-date data as possible To offer data to wide range of systems both commercial and open source To use standards whenever possible To keep the range of formats and different product versions as small as possible and still meet the customer needs -> Formats: GML, shape, mif, Geotiff, ascii grid, PNG, JPEG2000 Weekly processes to update the files Data is offered as predefined files (map sheet devision) and WMS- and WMTS-services

5 Aerial photographs and orthophotos
Every area of Finland is photographed in five years cycle The national aerial photographing program Spring and summer photographing every other time to meet mapping and forestry needs Orthophotos are produced few months after When orthophoto is finished it’s available in all services right away The data storage system has ability to always pick the latest and best photo of each place Formats TIFF (only manual deliveries), JPEG2000

6

7 Laserscanning data and elevation models
Covers now about 70 % of Finland Laserscanning is done in two quality classes 1st class quality scannings are done in spring 2nd class quality scannings are done in summer 2 m elevation model is produced using laserscanning data 10 m elevation model covers the whole of Finland Laserscanning in laz (packed las) format Elevation models in ascii grid and geotiff

8 Topographic Database Production
JAKO Smallworld GIS updating & quality improvement regular updating (5-10 year) annual road network updating and building updating digital photogrammetry (157 stereo workstations) continuous database over Finland 3 districts: Southern Middle Northern 210 persons.

9 Topographic Database in Numbers
Vector data in nominal scale 1: including 1: texts 10 million areas 8 million symbols 2.5 million texts including GNR placenames. GNR 1: place names: 46 million chains 2 billion line points 25 m DEM height values: 540 million 10 m DEM height values: > 3 billion 2 m DEM height values: 85 billion > 400Gb

10

11 Topographic database Extract application keeps record of changes in data File is extracted every night if a change has happend on it There is always available the same situation as in database Delivery formats GML, shape, mif

12

13 Small scale databases Updated yearly Formats shape, mif

14 Raster maps New production system built in 2014
SLD-technique used to create the style for maps Automates the whole process, weekly updates All data is loaded to PostGIS database Raster map files are produced using Geoserver and SLD- style files Same process produces files to download service and WMS- and WMTS-services PNG format, anti-aliased map-files Pixel sizes according to WMTS-tile standard (JHS180: 0.5 m, 1 m,2 m,4 m,8 m …)

15 Technical description
Visulataus01.nls.fi Visukartta PostgreSQL/PostGIS-database ATOM-feed, Java-download Geoserver PostgreSQL/ PostGIS PostgreSQL/ PostGIS WMS-service rsync http, WMS http, WMS https, ATOM F5 Big-IP load balancer File service of open data Visurasteri02.nls.fi interface (WMTS) Production of raster maps File storage

16 The delivery of products
Download service: Open data file download service Manual deliveries, memory stick or hard disk Service interfaces, WMS, WMTS WFS services for addresses, place names and a pilot WFS service for Topographic database View services MapSite, Paikkatietoikkuna Also other organisations offer NLS Topographic data Download services: Kapsi ry, ESRI online Mobile services: Karttaselain, Mapitare, B-Bark

17 Services provided by the File Service application
File service of open data (Map Interface) lang=en INSPIRE Download Service (ATOM) File service for updated files Based on ATOM / Modified INSPIRE Distribution of arbitrary files through ”directory listing HTML-interface” Internal Admin Web UI Internal Application Integration API These are essentially different user interfaces to a single application backend

18

19

20 Admin interface Dataset metadata management File & metadata browser Access rights management

21 Conclusion and future The production processes must be automated
The delivery must be efficient The data must be up-to-date New techniques and standards might simplify the products and formats even more in the future Maybe we only need to deliver vector database in GML and give the SLD style files Or maybe we only have an interface and the user modifies SLD to get the map he wants (dynamic WMS)
