2 2.03 Remember the structures of the lymphatic system
What are the structures of the lymphatic system? 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

3 Warm up Video- Lymphatic System

4 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph fluid Lymph vessels Lymph nodes Lymph glands 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

5 What is the Lymph System?
It is a network of organs, lymph nodes, ducts and vessels that produce and transport lymph from the tissues into the blood stream.

6 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph fluid Clear, straw-colored Fluid that flows throughout the lymph system. Made of white blood cells- (Lymphocytes) to fight bacteria. 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

7 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph vessels Closely parallel to blood vessels (veins) Transports lymph fluid throughout body Only flow in one direction 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

8 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph vessels parallel to blood vessels 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

9 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph vessels Lacteals Specialized lymph vessels (capillary) in the villi of the small intestines Absorb digested fat. 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

10 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

11 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph vessels Lymphatic ducts Large lymph vessels Thoracic duct (Left Thoracic Duct) receives lymph from the left side as pictured- Lymphatic vessel that collects lymph from the left chest, abdomen and lower limbs

12 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph vessels Lymphatic ducts Large lymph vessels Right Thoracic Duct- Fluid from the upper chest neck and head. Thoracic Duct (Left Thoracic Duct) - Fluid from the rest of the body. 12

13 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph nodes tiny, oval-shaped structures Range in size from a pinhead to an almond- usually can’t be seen or felt. Clusters in the neck, armpits, groin inside chest and abdomen. Lymph node

14 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph nodes Located all throughout the body. There are many lymph nodes- they filter the lymph fluid and help produce white blood cells. 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

15 Structures of the lymphatic system
Lymph nodes When bacteria are recognized by the lymph fluid, the nodes produce more infection fighting WBC’s. This causes the lymph nodes to swell. 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 15

17 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

18 Structures of the lymphatic system
Tonsils 3 pairs masses of lymphatic tissue Palatine tonsils sides of throat Adenoids upper throat Lingual tonsils back of tongue 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

19 Structures of the lymphatic system
Say “aahhh” Why this is helpful? 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

20 Structures of the lymphatic system
Spleen Largest Lymphatic structure Sac-like mass Located in the LUQ 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

21 Structures of the lymphatic system
Spleen Fist shaped, purple Normally can’t feel it. Filters blood and recycles RBC’s. Helps fight bacteria. Becomes enlarged with mono and certain cancers- Lymphoma 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system 21

22 Structures of the lymphatic system
Thymus gland located in the upper, anterior chest also an endocrine gland Produces- T-Lymphocytes- these have a memory and remember how to fight an infection you have already been exposed to. 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system

23 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system
Thymus gland Shrinks by early teen years. Decreased thymus gland is thought to be related to decreased immunity in the elderly. 2.03 Remember the stuctures of the lymphatic system
