5 2 Clinical Decision Support Systems to Improve Adherence to Clinical Guidelines A Clinic-Randomized Trial of a Clinical Decision Support System to Improve Dental Provider Delivery of Brief Tobacco Interventions and Quitline Referrals Collaboration with Brad Rindal, DDS, and the HealthPartners Institute for Education and Research NIDCR U01DE026135: Trial will modify two existing electronic dental record systems to generate recommendations for dentists and dental hygienists to give to their patients who smoke. Award Period: 8/2/2016 – 7/31/2020 Requested Award Amount: $2,488,348 Smoking is a primary risk factor for periodontal disease and oral cancer, and more critically, remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical decision support (CDS) to improve dental provider delivery of brief tobacco interventions and referrals to tobacco quitlines for further tobacco counseling. The CDS will be integrated within two commonly used electronic dental record (EDR) systems and will generate personalized evidence-based recommendations for dentists and dental hygienists to actively engage their smoking patients in the course of usual dental care. The tobacco CDS will be tested within two dental schools (The School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and the Indiana University School of Dentistry) as well as 16 private-practice clinics from the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. Aim 1 evaluates the impact of the tobacco CDS on the frequency of provider-delivery of brief smoking interventions and quitline referrals. Aim 2 assesses the impact of tobacco CDS on smokers’ cessation and reduction actions. Finally, Aim 3 examines providers’ barriers and facilitators to delivering the intervention, including knowledge, motivation, and self-efficacy. Further information: HS 10/2015
