3 What is a Simile? Everyone practice saying SIM-I-LE
Comparing or saying two things are “LIKE” each other. Think simi L e. The L helps us remember a simile is saying something is LIKE something else. Examples: The teacher is scary like a monster. The student is funny like a clown. It is as cold as ice. They fight like cats and dogs.

5 What is a Metaphor? A metaphor is saying that one thing IS something else. This is different from a simile because a simile says something is LIKE something else but a metaphor says something IS something else. Examples: The classroom IS a zoo. He is a shining star. My brother is a couch potato. Suzy is a chicken.

Think about ways that we can describe the characters using: similes, metaphors, idioms, antonyms, and synonyms We will also use our word of the week- AGAIN

15 A Christmas Carol As we read and get to know the characters we will write/talk about them. Who visited Scrooge “again”? Work with your neighbor to write a simile about Scrooge or another character Create a metaphor about a character Tiny Tim is “tiny” what is a synonym for “tiny”? What is an antonym?

16 A Christmas Carol “When Scrooge was young he was poor.  What is an antonym (opposite) for young/ poor?”  “Scrooge is mean and mad. What are synonyms (words that mean the same thing) as ‘mean’ or ‘mad’?”  Scrooge is like a __________. (weasel, rat, etc.) Scrooge was as greedy as a ___________. (snake, bank robber, etc.)

Capital: Is a big letter at the beginning of a word. We use capitals for words that are important. When to we use a capital? At the beginning of a sentence, a name, a place, etc.
