1 Introduction to 3D Printing
Endless Possibilities, Imagination Required Created by: JJ Johnson

2 3D Printing and the Future of Stuff
SciShow. "3D Printing and the future of stuff." Online video clip. YouTube. YouTube, 15 Apr Web. 5 January

3 History of 3D Printing “The inception of 3D printing can be traced back to 1976, when the inkjet printer was invented. In 1984, adaptations and advances on the inkjet concept morphed the technology from printing with ink to printing with materials. Click on infographic to the right to read more about the evolution of 3D printing.” (History of 3D Printing, para.2) History Of 3D Printing | 3D Printing InfographicBest 3D Scanners & 3D Printers | Best 3D Scanners & 3D Printers. (n.d.). Retrieved January 8, 2014, from

4 The Possibilities of 3D Printing
What things were discussed in the video and on the timeline that could be 3D printed? What things would you 3D print if you had your own printer such as the Orion Delta printer?

5 Will 3D printing really become a household trend?
CNET. "Will 3D printing really become a household trend?." Online video clip. YouTube. YouTube, 17 Dec Web. 5 January

6 Discussion Discuss the positive and negative aspects that you feel 3D printing presents. Do the positives outweigh the negatives? Who has the most to gain from 3D printing, manufacturers or consumers? These questions are part of a discussion board activity later in this module

7 The Origins of the Orion Delta 3D Printer
A Look at RepRap

8 RepRap “RepRap is humanity's first general-purpose self-replicating manufacturing machine.” (RepRap, 2013, para. 1) “RepRap takes the form of a free desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap prints those parts, RepRap self-replicates by making a kit of itself - a kit that anyone can assemble given time and materials. It also means that - if you've got a RepRap - you can print lots of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a friend…” (RepRap, 2013, para. 2) RepRap - RepRapWiki. (n.d.). Retrieved January 8, 2014, from

9 RepRap - Wealth without Money
The Original RepRap Click on the above RepRap logo to watch a video about the movement that helped push affordable 3D printing to the mainstream

10 SeeMeCNC (Maker of the Orion)
SeeMeCNC started manufacturing CNC machines in the fall of 2011 with a goal of bringing their CNC machining and injection molding capabilities to the DIY/Open Source community.

11 SeeMeCNC Printer Evolution
H1 Notice the differences between the general makeup of the H-1 and the Rostock Max and Orion printers Rostock Max Orion

12 Cartesian vs Delta The main difference between the two is how they move / position the print nozzle, cartesian based printers move in a linear XYZ manner while delta printers rely on three independent carriages to move up and down “towers” to place the printhead in exact locations. Typically Delta style printers require less parts, making them less expensive, yet from experience, just as accurate. Carriage Carriages X Z The print nozzle moves left/right (X) & up/down (Z) and the print bed moves forward/backward (Y) All motion is achieved through up/down movements to position the print nozzle Y

13 Printable Repositories
Looking Forward Even though 3D printing has been around for decades, the current affordability and technological advancements is making access to this technology possible for makers, educators, and more. There is still a lot to be learned and innovated involving the process, but creating a community of users such as you could lead to the day that you download and print your purchases rather than making a trip to the store. Printable Repositories Something to think about: What would a career in 3D printing look like? What skills would be required? Research to see if careers in 3D printing / rapid prototyping exist.
