1 Ceramics-Response to a painting
Final Exam Project

2 OBJECTIVES Your final exam project is worth 20% of your entire grade. You will constructing a 3- Dimensional sculpture based off of a 2 Dimensional work of art. The 2D work of art can be a painting, a drawing, a photograph, a sketch, etc. You will take elements that are in your chosen painting –such as line, shapes, forms, colors, etc. to develop your sculpture. 3 Dimensional Sculpture can be realistic, abstract, or a combination of both. This should be a large sculpture. Whether you construct something tall, or wide, it should be LARGE. This is your final exam project and should be the best and most challenging work you have done all term. Students will pull observable elements from their chosen 2D work of art, such as specific shapes, forms, objects, and will incorporate these into a 3D sculpture. Students will use multiple hand building methods in combination with one another to achieve a successful work of art. You can combine slab construction, coils, the hollowed form method, and or tile creation in this assignment

Hokusai created intricate woodblock carvings and would print numerous versions of landscapes and other imagery. He is perhaps known most for The Big Wave

4 Wood Block Carving and Printing Technique

10 Think about the shapes you are creating.
Geometric, or regular shapes are best constructed using the slab method. This sculptor was inspired by the simplified planes and angles of the mountains in this painting. Do you consider this sculpture to be abstract or realistic? How could you improve upon this sculptures design and add to the complexity?
