More effective description can come from: Using any of the types of imagery we learned – kinetic, gustatory, etc. Use the senses! Use of figurative language. A metaphor? Effective Syntax. Where can a periodic sentence or a parallel sentence make an impact? “it was the only battle I ever witnessed, the only battlefield I ever trod…” Strong verbs/adverbs: “fiercely contending” More effective exposition (comparing nature to man/society) can come from: Selection of detail (notice how Thoreau named specific regiments of soldiers, etc) Use of allusion (Thoreau alludes to Greek warriors like Achilles) Again, syntax changes and metaphor inclusion…
