11. “Floppy’s Phonics”
Simple texts containing words that children can decode using their phonics skills + tricky words that they also learn during phonics lessons.

12. We will use Floppy’s Phonics reading books to help children develop their decoding skills from pink to orange band.
When we read Floppy’s phonics books our main focus will be practising decoding skills – supporting the children to use their phonics skills to work out what each word says and means.

13. When we read other books our main focus will be teaching comprehension skills – making sure the children can talk and answer questions about books they have read and notice similarities and differences.
Each week the children will read twice in school and bring home two reading books – possibly three if they are in an intervention group.

14. Reading Homework
Children will bring home both reading books at the beginning of the week.
They will have already read one book in school and they will be reading the other book later in the week.
The reading diary will tell you what to focus on when you read the books at home.
You will be able to keep both books for a whole week but they MUST stay in your child’s reading bag and come back to school EVERY DAY so that we have them in school when we need to use them.

15. Reading Diaries
Please make a comment about your child’s reading ONCE each week so that we know how they are progressing with their reading at home.
This year we are making a change to the reading targets in your child’s reading diary. From October half term they will be replaced by parent information sheets to help you to support your child as he or she moves through the reading bands.

16. Well done! Your child is now reading Pink Band Reading Books!
Books in pink reading band provide opportunities for your child to practise blending words with two or three sounds in simple sentences. The stories are generally based around familiar experiences such as cooking dinner, playing games, going to the shops, playing in the park and so on.
Developing Decoding Skills
Help your child to work out what the words say by:
• Recognising each letter and blending the sounds together
• Recognising tricky words “off by heart”
Encourage your child to say words that they know straight away rather than sounding them out and remind them not to attempt to blend tricky words such as “the” or “he”.
Encourage your child to re-read the sentence several times until they can say it one go. At first you might need to say the whole sentence so that he or she can copy you!
Developing Comprehension Skills
Help your child to understand what the words mean by:
• Asking questions about the story as you read each page
Where are the children playing?
What is this little boy called?
What did Mum buy from the stall?
Why did Dad buy a mop?
Why is Kipper sad?
• Asking questions at the end of the book
Can you tell me the whole story?
What was your favourite part of the story?
How is this story the same as the one we read last week?
• Making sure your child understands (and can explain) the vocabulary
What is a rag?
What does pop mean?

17. Other Reading Homework Higher Frequency word envelope
Letter Card envelope
We will teach the children some new graphemes during the Autumn Term. As we teach them we will add them to your child’s letter card envelope to practise recognising at home.

We will also add new high frequency words as they are taught in school.

18. Parent Readers Needed for Reception and Year One!
If you have an hour or so to spare each week and would like to become a parent reader please let me know! There will be a training session on Tuesday 24th September.
