1 Mini hydro plants in Volta Region Republic of Ghana
Fabrizio BREGANNI Turin, December 15, 2016

2 Ambiente & Paesaggio 4 partners and 5 associates Established in 2005
Based in Villar Dora and Verbania Focus areas: sustainable energy production landscape architecture hydraulic engineering geology hydrological and hydrogeological studies; mini hydro power plants design; hydrogeological risk prevention project;

3 Partner in Ghana Local investor
President of the traditional House of Chiefs Privately-owned limited liability company Activities in the power sector: mini-hydro solar power gas-turbine

4 Electric power in Ghana
Current access to electricity is approx. 70% (2015) A large proportion of the country has no power supply Recurrent black-outs are a limiting factor for the industrial development The Government offers support to private investors in the energy industry

5 Hydroelectric power in Ghana
The Akosombo Dam on the Volta river generates MW used mainly for the Al industry and for large cities No small/mini hydro plants in Ghana at present Many rivers have the potential for small hydropower development (<10 MW) data from: World Small Hydropower development report (UNIDO) and (ICSHP)

6 Sites under development in Ghana
40 MW Average cost: 3000 USD/kW Bulb and Pelton turbines

7 Sites under development in Ghana

8 Sites under development in Ghana

9 Benefit of Mini hydro plant tecnology
Small single investment Investments can be phased Production can start within 1-2 years Do not require highly specialised workforce Local workforce can be used for construction and for maintenance Low impact on the natural environment

10 Opportunities and Threats
New regulatory and legal framework for development and use of renewable energy source Good economic incentives in place to attract investors to small hydropower Elevated request of energy and drinkable water Limited local technical expertise; Lack of reliable technical data about the river (flow rate, rain etc.) Cyclic droughts Climate change

11 Local involvement The Ministry of Energy will support the project with their technical staff Local universities will be involved in the project Programs will be developed to train local technicians on how to run and maintain the power plants

12 Ghana Waterworks Energy: Milestone Assumptions
1 Project Milestones Break ground Volta Region Other sites Complete fase 1 Tsatsadu falls and Asukawakawa 03 Complete fase 2 Feasibility studies of the 8 places Asukawakawa + Menusu Complete fase 2 Preliminary licence Wlii falls and Asukawakawa 01 Complete fase 2 Hohoe and Lipke Complete fase 1 & 2 YR (1) 2016 YR (2) 2017 YR (3) 2018 YR (4) 2019 YR (5) 2020 YR (6) 2021 Tsatsadu falls and Asukawakawa 02 plants Hohoe and Lipke plants Wlii falls and Asukawakawa 01 plants Asukawakawa 03 & 04 plants
