1 Lesson Planning

2 Lesson Plan Elements, Examples and Learning Tasks
As you navigate through this presentation, please use the link below to access the necessary resources. Lesson Plan Elements, Examples and Learning Tasks

3 Inquiry--- Check for understanding between each phase of inquiry.
Each lesson plan created should contain one or more places to stop and check for understanding (formative assessment). Direct Instruction-- Built in the lesson plan under “Checking for Understanding” but should be utilized throughout the lesson. Guided Learning-- Check for understanding should take place after each orientation and during activity. The response phase could be formative or summative. Inquiry--- Check for understanding between each phase of inquiry. Note: According to Grant Wiggin’s study of Hattie’s research, formative assessment ranked in the top three strategies (out of 138) that positively and exponentially affect student achievement. Make sure formative assessments are included in your lesson plans.

4 Generic Lesson Plan *Look over the Generic Lesson Plan.
*What are the three main components? How taught How Evaluated What taught *Where do the other plans fit in? *Why would it be important to review objective at the end of the lesson?

5 Different Types of Lesson Delivery
Direct Instruction Guided Learning Inquiry Elementary: Guided Reading CMI (Comprehensive Mathematics Instruction)

6 1. Direct Instruction “Practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent. New learning is like wet cement; it is easily damaged. You had better be there with your trough to smooth it out. Once it is dry, an elephant can stand on it.”Madeline Hunter

7 Direct Instruction What are the 8 components of Direct Instruction?
Are there any components that you do not understand?

8 What are the usual suspects (errors) that teachers make when
using Direct Instruction? 1. The modeling, guided practice and independent practice are not aligned. 2. A lecture is not direct instruction- DI should include active engagement. The modeling, guided practice and independent practice are not aligned.

9 Learning Task Look over the Direct Instruction Lesson Plan examples then create a rough draft Direct Instruction Lesson Plan tied to your CORE curriculum using the worksheet provided. Use worksheet provided

10 2. Guided Learning What are the components of a Guided Learning Lesson Plan? Look over the elementary and secondary samples of guided learning. Did they align with the components of Guided Learning? See worksheet

11 Pick a learning activity you do with your students
Pick a learning activity you do with your students. Fill out the first part of your Learning Task for Guided Learning Worksheet. Fill out first part (Before the Meeting) of worksheet.

12 What are the usual suspects (errors) teachers make when using
Guided Learning? 1. Once the activity is completed, teachers forget to include response time. 2. Teachers just do an activity without a plan or objective and call it Guided Learning.

13 Learning Task Take a look at your learning activity. Brainstorm what you would include in your response time following that activity. Part two and three of the worksheet

14 3. Guided Inquiry Lesson Plan
Using the continuum below, read over the last paragraph on the worksheet “Using Inquiry with Students” to come up with a definition of Guided Inquiry. Expository Guided Inquiry Free Discovery ___________________________________

15 Inquiry Lesson Plan What are the 5 phases of an Inquiry Lesson Plan?
Which one involves teacher input?

16 Learning Task Look over the elementary example of a Guided Inquiry lesson. How would the “Inquiry Data Sheet” help facilitate this inquiry lesson?

17 What are the usual suspects (errors) teachers make when using
Guided Inquiry? 1. Teacher does not prepare initial scaffolding of essential question. 2. Students are not guided to where and what resources they can use or the teacher does not provide enough resources. 3. Teacher tells them the answer instead of letting them gather evidence and decide for themselves. 4. Teacher does not think through follow-up questions.

18 Formative Assessment on Lesson Planning
Take the ‘Lesson Planning’ worksheet and make comparisons between all three lesson types. Discuss with a partner when you should use which lesson plan.
