1 SESSION PLAN Tack – which tack is a boat on? Subject Welcome
Tack – which tack is a boat on? Welcome 1-minute Introduction to the session. If cadets are to receive slide #19 as a handout, ensure they are available and suggest do not hand out until relevant time (pens also to be available) Activity #1  15-minute Slide 2 to 18 with discussion and answer questions on answer screen as necessary. Slide 4 will take longest to explain as it sets context for all other slides. Activity #2  5-minute Slide 19 – cadets to consider and provide their view on which boat is on which tack and their rational. If run as a quiz, hand out slide #19 Activity #3  5-minute Review answers to slide #19 Consolidation  1-minute Slide #19 to be taken away or hand slide #24 out as a summary or post on unit wall as a poster (latter is more environmentally friendly). 2 Sailing: which tack am I on?
Sailing Boat: Tack Determining if a sailing boat is on Port or Starboard tack

3 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 01
Wind

4 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 01
Wind The wind is coming over the Port side of the boat, You can confirm this as the boom is on the Starboard side of the boat The boat is on Port-tack

5 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 02
Wind

6 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 02
Wind The wind is coming over the Starboard side of the boat, You can confirm this as the boom is on the Port side of the boat The boat is on Starboard-tack

Wind The wind is coming over the Port side of the boat, You can confirm this as the boom is on the Starboard side of the boat The boat is on Port-tack

9 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 04
Wind

10 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 04
Wind The wind is coming over the aft of the boat and therefore you need to look at the boom. The boom is on the Starboard side of the boat and therefore the wind must be coming over the Port thwart. The boat is on Port-tack

11 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 05
Wind

12 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 04
Wind The wind is coming over the aft of the boat and it looks also like it is coming over the Starboard side of the boat. However, in sailing the important factor is which side the boom is. The boom is on the Starboard side of the boat and therefore the boat must be on a Port tack. The boat is on Port-tack

15 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 07
Wind

16 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 07
Wind You can’t tell. A boat that is passing through head to wind is on the same tack as it was before, and will remain so until it can sail a close haul course which is its new tack.

17 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 07
Wind The boat was previously on Starboard-tack and will therefore remain on Starboard-tack until it can sail on a new tack (Port or Starboard). The boat is on Starboard-tack

18 Port-tack or Starboard-tack 07
Wind The boat was previously on Port-tack and will therefore remain on Port-tack until it can sail on a new tack (Port or Starboard). The boat is on Port-tack

L B The boat remains on Starboard-tack, even as it passes head to wind (“J”) until is can sail on close hauled course. At “J” it ca now sail on Port-tack close hauled course. It remains on that even when head to wind (“L”) when it return to a Port-tack close hauled course and then return to “A”. K C J D I E H F G
