How to make polite commands
(Several people are in a room.) Alex: YOU, PLEASE FLASH-LIGHTS. (Lisa flashes the lights on and off.) Alex: YOU, CLOSE-DOOR. FEEL A-LITTLE COLD. (Lisa closes the door.) Alex: THANK-YOU. PLEASE SIT. (Everyone sits down.) Alex: NOW GO-AHEAD START.

About verb pairs and noun – verb pairs
Grammar Note: Compare the reversal in movement for CLOSE-DOOR AND OPEN-DOOR and in some other verb pairs: CLOSE-DOOR OPEN-DOOR close the door open the door CLOSE-WINDOW OPEN-WINDOW close the window open the window CLOSE-DRAWER OPEN-DRAWER close the drawer open the drawer CLOSE-BOOK OPEN-BOOK close the book open the book

Grammar Note: Some verbs such as CLOSE/OPEN-DOOR and SIT have noun forms which differ in movement. The noun forms in two ways: their movement is repeated and it is smaller. Compare the following pairs of verbs and nouns: SIT CHAIR sit down chair, seat OPEN-DOOR DOOR open door door OPEN-WINDOW WINDOW open-window window OPEN-DRAWER DRAWER open drawer drawer OPEN-BOOK BOOK open book book

Some verbs have repeated movement. As in the previous slide, the noun forms have repeated and smaller movements. Compare the following pairs of verbs and nouns: WRITE PENCIL write pencil, pen DRIVE CAR drive car, automobile RIDE-BICYCLE BICYCLE ride a bicycle bicycle

How to use DON’T-MIND and FOR ME in making requests.
DON’T-MIND IT OPEN-WINDOW? Would you mind opening the window? Note: DON’T-MIND is used in the above example as a polite way to make a request for someone else to do something. DON’T-MIND is also used to ask if it’s all right for you to do something as in: __t__ _______q________ PAPER, DON’T-MIND I TAKE? Okay if I take some paper?

Another way of asking someone to do something is use FOR ME as in the sentence below” _____________q______________ PLEASE FOR ME BOX CARRY-THERE? Can you carry my box for me please?

About verb pairs involving turning on and off.
Note: As with OPEN-DOOR and CLOSE-DOOR, some other verbs involving turning something on and off use a reversal of the movement. Compare the following: TURN-ON (KNOB-TYPE SWITCH) TURN-OFF (KNOW-TYPE SWITCH) TURN-ON-LIGHT TURN-OFF-LIGHT TURN-ON (LEVER-TYPE-SWITCH) TURN-OFF (LEVER-TYPE SWITCH)

How Deaf people get attention of others.
Culture Note: Flashing the lights on and off in a room is a common way for Deaf people to get each other’s attention. This is usually done within groups, but can be done to get attention of someone alone in a room. However, a preferred way of getting attention of someone is a small wave of the hand in the person’s field of vision. Waving both hands at once can also get the attention of a group if flashing isn’t possible.

At home Deaf people get each other’s attention primarily by waving the hand or sharply rapping on a surface such as a table with the fist or flat of the hand so that the other person can feel it. Sometimes a well-measured stomp of a foot on the floor is acceptable. Another way to get someone’s attention is to touch or tap lightly on the arm, shoulder, or knee.

A note of caution: waving, rapping, and stomping are usually used in ways which do not disturb people who hear in public places and can be quite annoying even to Deaf people if overdone. Clapping the hands to get someone’s attention is neither effective nor socially acceptable.
