10 Topics of the day: Police Confrontation
Have you ever been stopped by the police? What do you think you should do when confronted by a police offer? Can a police officer use their own personal judgment or discretion in deciding how to treat an offender?

11 Factors Affecting Police Discretion:
Someone’s attitude and appearance. His/her criminal history. The type and seriousness of the offense or crime. The setting or location where the problem occurred. The age of the individual. The sex and sometimes the religion or race of the person. The willingness of the parents to discipline their child (if he is a juvenile).

12 Activity 1: The police Officer’s Duties
List some ways you can help the police make your neighborhood safe. For these purposes, don’t warry about grammar and spelling. Just do the best you can. The main idea is for you to participate.

13 Activity 2: Police Confrontation
Case-Study: Brainstorm: Two police officers were making an arrest when the women they were dealing with began to scream without stopping. This caused bystanders to get involved. The result was that it became increasingly hard for the police to do their job. The authorities then told the woman that she was under arrest. She resisted and scratched them. The policed used physical force. In the end, she was arrest for obstruction of justice, resting arrest with violence, battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct. What should you do when confronted by a police officer? Make your own list of steps to follow when confronted by a police officer.

14 Activity 3: Be Wise… Know the Law
Circle the answers to the following questions to see what you know about the law. The more you know the less likely you will be to have a confrontation with police.

15 What to do… You are not Powerless!
Do not argue with police. Remain quiet and speak only if you’re asked questions. Stand still and avoid quick moves. Make sure you get the officer’s name or badge number (if you cant get this information try to get either the officer’s squad car number or license plate number). Go to the police station and give a repot of what happened to a supervisor. If you are still unhappy with results, report the incident to the internal affairs division of the police department. Know in advance that this will take time.

16 Conclusion Avoid confrontation. If you are being followed by police, you should avoid getting angry and confronting them. The more you understand your rights the less likely you are to experience a negative outcomes.
