1 Hunger Games As a class we are going to be reading “The Hunger Games.”
We will be listening to portions of the audiobook, watching relevant movie clips, and completing a number of activities. You will keep work in your journal as well as hand outs you receive.

2 New Quarter New Seats Wait to be told where your new seat is.
Don’t complain, bad way to start off Second Quarter

3 Quarter One Wrap Up Overall Class Average of 805, 806, 807 was a 64 percent for first Quarter. Average grade on the Journal Review was a 61 percent. Average classwork grade overall was a 59 percent. Average IRP Grade was a 40 percent. (That’s bad) Average Assessment grade was a 78 (That’s good!)

4 So How Do We Improve? Follow Directions and Complete Classwork
If I ask for 5 sentences in your Reading Reactions, I mean 5 sentences. Not 3, Not 4, Not 4 and then a sentence that says “This is my reading reaction.” If I ask for 3 sentences in the warm up, write 3 sentences! If classwork asks for a six sentence answer and asks you to use details from the text I will not give credit for vague or short answers. If we’re using the Chrome Books, COMPLETE THE CLASSWORK and COMPLETE IT WELL! If a project asks for a summary, analysis, and reading reactions; do them!

5 Before we Read Science Fiction Genre Dystopia Reality TV
Roman Coliseum

6 Science Fiction Genre The hunger games is set “the ruins of what was once North America.” The land is now called Panem. 13 Districts now comprise the working class population all governed by the Capitol. Collins created a new world, now it’s your turn.

7 Dystopia Dys – Bad ….. Topia Place
Dystopia means Bad Place In “The Hunger Games” there was a great war that ravaged the world before Panem. After the war the Capitol took control, divided the nation into districts, created a military force of Peacekeepers to control the population and drove everyone into poverty except the privileged few that lived inside the Capitol walls. Panem is a dystopia. Collins broke her world, now you will too.

8 Reality TV Clip from Ellen

9 Reality TV In “The Hunger Games” in an effort to keep the districts controlled, every year “The Capitol” produces and televises a brutal fight to the death between the various tributes of each district. Despite the horrors that ensure, everyone watches the games. Complete the activity and think about the kind of reality television you watch. How does it compare?

10 Roman Coliseum In Ancient Rome, Gladiators would fight to the death for the amusement of thousands just as the tributes do in “The Hunger Games.” Most gladiators were slaves, forced to fight, just as the tributes are often unprepared. Some tributes however train their entire lives to volunteer for the games just as there were ancient schools for gladiators. Create your own gladiator now!
