3 Awards for Cubs, Boy Scouts & Venturing Scouts
Nova Awards (patch & pi pin) Expands on & enhances accomplishment of program activities (adventures, merit badges, venturing activity areas) by offering additional modules to explore STEM Adult counselors familiar with STEM topics guide explorations Supernova Awards (medals) Encourages original STEM investigations and projects by scouts, recognized as significant accomplishment in the STEM program Adult mentors who are accomplished STEM practitioners guide explorations and provide advancement quality control Super/Nova REQUIREMENTS are at

4 NOVA AWARDS SUPERNOVA AWARDS
The first Nova Award that a Scout earns is recognized by a Nova patch. The Scout receives a pi pin for each subsequent Nova. There are currently 7 Nova Awards for Cub Scouts, 5 for Boy Scouts and 4 for Venturing Scouts. National is developing additional Nova Awards. Nova Counselors must be registered leaders. Information on process is in the subpages of ncacbsa.org/stem Supernova recipients are recognized with a medallion on a neck ribbon. Supernova Mentors must be registered leaders. Information on process is in the subpages of ncacbsa.org/stem Supernova Awards are processed at the Council Level. NCAC’s specific processes are also listed on the STEM page.

7 ACTIVITIES : MITRE Scout Engineering Day
2/25/2018 MITRE annually invites 400 Boy & Girl Scouts to select from 22 STEM classes (based on Merit Badges) in a hands-on event.

STEM in a Box STEM activity kits related to Nova Awards that units or districts may check out to jumpstart the program. These will be launched at STEM University: June 10, 2017 Don’t miss it!

9 STEM + MEMBERSHIP Join Scouting Nights with STEM activities are successful! Units with a STEM focus are as well – this is especially popular with Exploring.

10 CAMPING and STEM Camp William B. Snyder STEM DAY CAMP
Build a quadcopter, learn to weld, use a 3D printer, and learn the physics on the COPE Course during the STEM Challenges weeks 3 & 6. All weeks: earn a Start Your Engines Nova Award! and a Kayaking Merit Badge at Camp Olmsted. July 1-8 & July 22-29, 2017 Scouts enjoy all of the shooting sports and aquatics activities that Camp Snyder has to offer, but they will also learn about geology while pan mining for gems, build electronic airboats for a raingutter regatta competition, and design Mars Rovers. Cub scouts may earn 2 of the recently published Nova Awards! July 24 – 27, 2017 Goshen scout reservation STEM Challenges & Novas

11 Camp Snyder: STEM Shack
Makerspace at NCAC’s property in Haymarket, VA with digital manufacturing tools (CAD, CNC mill, 3D printing, laser engraving), full woodshop, soldering and electronics, and host to many more STEM activities.

12 TRAININGS There is a lot of information... There are also many training opportunities! Supernova Mentor & Nova Counselor Training is taught at : University of Scouting Pow Wow STEM University (June 10, 2017) Other STEM Classes are taught at : Commissioner’s College Key 6 meeting How can you find out about them?

13 Scouting has always taught survival skills, but today’s youth need STEM literacy to survive in the future. STEM in Scouting offers the unique opportunity to experience science, technology, engineering and mathematics in tandem with character development, leadership training, and ethical decision-making. Within the framework of the aims and methods of scouting, STEM encourages exploration of future career opportunities, hobbies and interests.
