AN INTRODUCTION TO DALI
2
What is DALI ? (1) The subject DALI is a synonym for a standard, independent of the manufacturer to control electronic ballast devices (ebd`s) and lamps the digital way
3
What is DALI ? (2) This standard (DALI) is supported by the worldwide leading manufacturers of ebd`s since 1999. There is a working group ( Activity Group DALI – ag.org) to establish the DALI Standard. Since October ABB Stotz Kontakt is a member of AG DALI and therefore authorised to assemble and sell DALI compatible devices with DALI Logo. Members of working group AG DALI: ABB, BAG, CEAG, DELMATIC, DIAL, ECKERLE, ERC, ERCO, ETAP, GEWISS, GITRONICA, HADLER, HELVAR, HÜCO, INSTA, JOHANSON CONTROLS, LIGHTOLIER, LUTRON, LUXMATE, MAY&CHRISTE, NIKO, OSRAM, PHILIPS LIGHTING, SANDER, TRIDONIC, TROLL, UNIVERSAL LIGTHING TECHNOLOGIES, VOSSLOHGIES, VOSSLOH-SCHWABE, WILA

What is DALI ? (4) Task of working group DALI
worldwide adoption of DALI Securing the convertibility of DALI devices Support of application of DALI No Certification or Registration of DALI devices necessary DALI Logo indicates the compatibility of DALI components DALI is a stand-alone System. It is a digital control and a subsystem for lighting technology and not a bussystem Specification is documented in DIN IEC 60929

DALI - the Standard for Lighting Technology
DALI is a digital interface in lighting technology, used as a subsystem in building technology It is supported by all manufacturers of electronic ballast devices (ebd`s) A standard independent of the manufacturer Specification is documented in DIN IEC 60929 Einstieg – Kurze Wiederholung was ist DALI und wo sind die Vorteile
7
Where is DALI today (1) DALI is more and more in use in non residential buildings Modern and smart Lighting technology is with DALI feasible, including coulored light For all types of lamps (e.g. halogen lamps, fluorescent lamps, bulbs, LEDs) are appropiated ballast devices available The product range of DALI components will extend on L&B 2004 DALI-Gateways for superior building installation systems like EIB / KNX, LON ... are available
8
Where is DALI today (2) Architects for Illumination accept DALI as ideal tool for lighting technology DALI is specified in many cases for Light moods (e.g. Doctor`s surgery) Light effects (e.g. Show rooms) Functional Light control (e.g. Office buildings) Supervision (e.g. Building with Facility-Management)
9
DALI Technology (1) 2 wires cable – no polarity
The DALI control line can be installed together with mains cable (e.g. by using a 5 wires standard cable) L N DALI
10
DALI Technology (2) DALI relates to DIN IEC 60929, which defines a digital dim interface for elektronic ballast devices (ebd`s). Standardised is: Technical items (Current, Voltage, Timing ...) Data protocol Test conditions for ebd`s
11
DALI Technology (3) Technical Data Data speed 1200 Baud (Bit/Sek.)
Master-Slave System without collision control Control line with 2 wires Interface voltage 16V (9,5V bis 22,5V) Interface current 250mA DALI devices needs max. 2mA No SELV – no special cable needed max. 64 DALI components in one system Up to 16 groups Up to 16 light scenes
12
DALI Technology (4) Functionality Switching (ON/OFF)
Set of brightness values Dimming via logarithmic characteristic curve (like human eye) Fading times for scenes Control of individual devices or groups Synchronised dimming of all components Simultaneous control of all devices (Broadcast-Mode) max. / min. Dimming limits) Status feedback (Lamp on/off, topical Brightness value, Lamp-, ebd fault) Operation with emergency power
13
DALI Technology (5) The Intelligence of DALI is not centralised. A lot of adjustments and brightness values are stored in the EBD Individual adress Assignment to groups Light scenes Speed of Dimming Switch on brightness in case of voltage recovery Brightness value in case of emergency power supply
