1 Learning Target: While reading this chapter, I can notice how the author’s diction (word choice) contrasts the scar and the beach. While reading this chapter, I can find examples of imagery. After reading this chapter, I can infer why Golding gave this chapter this name.

2 Lord of the Flies Notebook Entries:
For each chapter, you will be given a reading focus and a writing assignment you will complete in your composition book (notebook) for this class. Make sure each entry is labeled with the chapter and date assigned. Always put the question into your response.

3 “The Sound of the Shell” Nov. 6, 2013
Label entry: LOTF ~ Ch. 1 ~ pgs. 7-31 “The Sound of the Shell” Nov. 6, 2013 While reading this chapter, pay attention to the descriptive phrases Golding uses to contrast the scar in the jungle versus the beach. 1. Write down two CDs that describe the scar and two CDs that describe the beach. (CDs must be written down word for word from the chapter, using quotation marks and page numbers).

4 LOTF ~ Ch. 1 continued ~ Pay attention to the imagery used to describe Jack’s arrival on the beach with the choir. Imagery is when the vivid words used paint a picture in one’s mind of what is happening. 2. Write down two CDs that are good examples of imagery. (CDs must be written down word for word from the chapter, using quotation marks and page numbers).

5 LOTF ~ Ch. 1 continued ~ Golding purposefully named each of the chapters in this book. 3. Explain why he chose “The Sound of the Shell” as this chapter’s title. Then, write down two CDs that support your elucidation. (CDs must be written down word for word from the chapter, using quotation marks and page numbers).
