Our new feeder pole and house feeder, suet feeder and thistle feeder have arrived.
The ground is so hard we have to wait for rain to get the pole feeder in the ground. We put up the window feeders and suet feeder and thistle feeders. Not many birds. 

3rd grade meets today!
First time birders join Mrs. Frawley in the courtyard. About 20 students meet to learn about using the new binoculars! We now have 7 Vortex binoculars. Around the courtyard are pictures of birds to practice focusing.
4th grade meets today!
During their lunch time, 4th graders meet Mrs. Bennett in the courtyard. 22 eager and excited students learn how to use the new binoculars. Using the pictures of the birds in the courtyard it helps to practice. A chickadee scolds us as it wants to eat bird seed.

Today we meet our old 4th grade birders now 5th graders! A quick meeting 8:45 – 9:00 AM. While only 2 showed up they are very excited to use the new binoculars. Review how to focus and practiced using photos.
We saw:
1 Cardinal
1 Chickadee
Mrs Frawley: I showed the 3rd graders the field guides and the Audubon app on our iPad.
We went over the parts of the bird.
There were some black capped chickadees in the courtyard so we used the app to identify them.

11 very enthusiastic 4th graders met during lunch time. We went over part of the bird and used a field guide to identify a Chickadee. We went to the other courtyard and saw two birds!

Dark-eye Junco The Junco was very active looking for food on the ground. He has migrated from Canada.

Grade 4 met during lunch time
learning about how to decide the
size of birds to help identifying.

Goose size – a 4th grade school

3rd grade creates a bird blind
in the hallway!
A rainy day creates a buzz in
the 3rd grade hallway. Birds
love the rain and feast on the seed. Our bird blind is very busy on this rainy day. Check out our photos.
Ved (5th grader) is able to identify using the iPad and field guide the birds on his own with Mrs. Bennett at 8:30 AM.

6 very excited 4th graders find many House Sparrows on their own. Even a Junco hiding under the bench. Also, we all filled one of the bird feeders looking at the different types of seed.

Early in the morning, Ved (5th) identifies a Junco on his own.

8. Date: December 7, 2016
Mrs. Frawley sees a Red Tailed Hawk in the courtyard. It stayed in the courtyard most of the day.

4th grade birders were very busy during their lunch spotting many birds in the courtyard. We saw Goldfinch, Downy Woodpecker, Chickadee, Nuthatch, House Finch, Mourning Dove and lots of Juncos!
We learned about using a bird’s shape as a way to identify the type of bird. Knowing it’s “group” helps one locate it in a field guide. Check out our “December” write up on our website.

9. Date: January 7, 2017
Mrs. Frawley and Mrs. Bennett spotted a new visitor to the courtyard. A Cooper’s Hawk. A lot of students have noticed the many Dark-eyed Juncos in the courtyards.

Michael, Austin and Lucas joined Mrs. Bennett to observe the courtyards during lunch.

What was so exciting was seeing a male and female Cardinal at the same time. Plus the male Cardinal gave the female a sunflower seed to eat by placing it in her beak. Very exciting for us all to see!
