Need(s) or Areas to Watch Updates/Changes Girl Scout Convention, Columbus Ohio: October Oct. 3-8,various events: participation: 10,000 – 12,000 Need to coordinate with NASA Communications as this event is in their plan for 2017; also need to coordinate with NASA Glenn Research Center re. their participation in the event. Badge and Volunteer Tool Kit Field Testing: 1. Daisy: 2nd phase in 2 councils*; 12 troops 2. Brownie 2nd phase in 2 councils; 12 troops 3. Junior: 1st phase in Girl Scouts Nor Cal: 4 troops 4. Cadette: 1st phase begins in June, Senior: 1st phase begins in July, Ambassador: 1st phase begins in Sept, 2017 Badge and Volunteer Tool Kit Field Testing is done in 3 stages. The final stage will be will 10 councils. *Girl Scouts Nor Cal and Eastern Mass. Final badge releases for all Girl Scouts will occur in 2018 and 2019. Look Ahead and Status Training and Travel Programs: All are fully enrolled. 3 Eclipse Destinations: grade 7 – 12 Girl Scouts Astronomy Camp Destination at University of Arizona June 30-July 4 (full). Girl Scout Leaders' Workshop in Hand-on Astronomy at University of Arizona in mid-May, next October Space Science Camp at GSFC: 11 teams selected for week-long workshop in June. Each team is 2 Girl Scouts, 1 Girl Scout STEM lead, and 1 amateur astronomer who will develop an astronomy club for their Girl Scout council. June Online Training for Girl Scouts Nationally May 4 and May 23: A 2-part webinar on the Girl Scout Eclipse Boxes, including introduction to eclipses, safe viewing, review of 14 activities about the sun, moon and Earth, and overview of resources. 160 Girl Scout staff, volunteers and camp counselors attended online. Recordings and downloads available through Girl Scouts of Northern California at: Golden Gate Girl Scout Bridging – April 29 Girl Scout Stars eclipse activity exhibit at event for 7,000 Girl Scouts who came from across the nation. Cross-Collaboration Status We are collaborating to connect Girl Scout Councils with StarNet/library project and the team managing NASA eclipse activities at GSFC. Collaboration with the Night Sky Network being developed for Girl Scout badge activities and for eclipse training through the Astronomical Society of the Pacific as a part of this project. The Girl Scout councils that receive the Eclipse Boxes are connected to the NASA GSFC Eclipse resources, telecons, and other events to provide information and resources. Initiated discussion with several NASA-affiliated Earth Science educators to discuss meeting with Girl Scouts USA re. STEM badge development (Lin Chambers, Theresa Schwerin, and others.) Theresa working on next meeting date with GSUSA staff (New York City.)
