The solar system

Sun The sun is bigger than everything In our solar system put together. The sun applies a pulling force called gravity this pulls on everything within six thousand million kilometres, if that is written it would be 60,000,000,000km, locking them in its orbit.

Venus Venus is the second planet from the sun. Venus is named after the roman god of love. Although Venus is around the same size and mass as the earth, Venus' atmosphere is a lot thicker than Earth’s this traps in a lot of heat giving Venus the hottest surface temperature of all the planets.

Earth Our planet has an average temperature of just 22°c.
This keeps our planet as the only planet in our solar system to be able to keep liquid water on its surface. Our planet orbits around the Sun at around 30 kilometres per second. Earth also holds in its orbit 1 moon. Press the rocket!

Mars Mars is named after the Roman goddess of war and also known as the red planet, it is red because the dust on the surface has iron oxide in it which is better known as rust. River beds and shorelines are quite easy to point out but probes and buggies have found no signs of water. Mars has 2 moons.

Asteroid belt Asteroids are left over pieces of rock from the creation of the planets. A major impact of an asteroid around 65 million years ago hit the Earth and some scientists believe this is the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Jupiter Jupiter is named after the Roman king of the gods and is the biggest planet in our solar system and is a gas giant. Jupiter has around 67 moons in its orbit.

Saturn Saturn in named after the roman god of farming, citizens and prosperity. Saturn is another gas giant and holds its famous gas rings. The planet is wider than it is tall by 12,000 kilometres. Saturn has around 63. moons.

Uranus The planet is named after the Greek ruler of the heavens and is the father of Saturn. Uranus’ axis is almost at a right angle so it appears to roll round the sun. This planet is also a gas giant. Uranus has around 27 moons.

Neptune Neptune is named after the Roman god of the sea.
Neptune is a gas giant. Galileo discovered Neptune on December 28th 1612 and in 2011 Neptune will return to its position where it was discovered. That means it takes 399 years to orbit round the sun. Neptune has 13 moons.

Pluto Pluto, since august 2006 has been classed as a dwarf planet.
All information about Pluto is based on observations as we have not yet sent a probe to visit it. Pluto has an abnormal orbit as for some of the Pluto year it is closer than Neptune. In 2113 Pluto will return to its point at which it was discovered. Pluto has 13 moons.

Comets The most famous comet of all is Halley's comet which appears next in 2024. Records date back to around 204bc and some cave markings back to around 1060bc. During the Norman conquest of 1066 Halley’s comet is depicted on the Bayeux tapestry.

Moons Moons are sometimes known as natural Satellite because they are able to stay in an orbit around a planet. On earth the moon controls the tides in the sea. A moon is stuck in an orbit of a planet and is orbiting the planet as well as the sun.

Rockets In 1969 America put the first man on the moon his name was Neil Armstrong and his crew of 2 buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, in Apollo 11. Other Apollo missions where not as successful as Apollo 11 for example Apollo 13 crashed and all crew members were killed. Welcome to space
