3 Objectives Describe the West Texas Cancer Survivors Network (WTCSN) initiatives Describe the Do-Si-Do of Cancer Protection Encourage action on developing a cancer protective lifestyle Encourage enrollment in WTCSN

4 WTCSN – Phase 2 “Connecting Cancer Survivors for Better Health”
Funded by CPRIT for 3 years; ends November 30, 2016 Continuation/expansion grant (Phase 3) is in review; will be notified in February, 2017 Phase – 2 is an initiative to expand and enroll cancer survivors in a network – to provide cancer survivor information, enhance quality of life, and encourage healthy habits of cancer survivors in West Texas

Survivorship begins with a cancer diagnosis Stages of survivorship: Living through cancer Living with cancer Living beyond cancer In Stage 3, 2/3 of cancer survivors say their lives return to normal; 1/3 report having continuing physical, psychosocial, & financial consequences Most survivors go back to their PCP for health care

10 Cancer Survivors More than 14 million in the United States; expect 20 million by 2020 Testament to early detection and treatment “The way to survive cancer is to find it early!” Cancer diagnosis is no longer a universal death sentence The Downside, Increased risk for second primary cancers Increased risk of comorbidities e.g. cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis Increased risk functional decline Cancer survivors in rural West Texas often lack access to healthcare services and support groups that can improve their health outcome

70 % of Americans surveyed consider their diets to be healthy do-si-do AICR recommendations: A plant based diet with meat and dairy 1/3 or less of the plate <23% actually following plant based model 18% men 28% women
