Understanding the word odyssey Step 1 Think about the following question. Why is the life phase between adolescence and adulthood called “odyssey years”? Step 2 Read the following introduction of the story of Odyssey.

56 Enhancing your skills Language focus Language highlighting
2018/2/9 Language focus Language highlighting The Odyssey is a long epic poem by Homer, the Greek author. It describes the journey and adventures of the Greek hero, Odysseus, after the war of Troy. During the long journey, Odysseus encountered repeated troubles and challenges. He fought against raging waves and various demons and resisted temptations of wealth and women. After about 10 years, he finally returned home and reunited with his wife and son. Step 3 Watch the video clips of Odyssey and learn more about this hero.

60 Enhancing your skills Language focus Language highlighting
As depicted in the poem The Odyssey, Odysseus was wandering away from home and loved ones. During his journey of about 10 years, he encountered repeated troubles and challenges. The essentials of the journey are not only outward struggles against tremendous difficulties, but, more importantly, inward struggles leading to personal growth. His journey is the one of self-discovery and of combating his own arrogance and pride from his young rebellious heart. Therefore, it makes sense to borrow the word odyssey to describe the rebellious years young people usually go through. The term odyssey years is a metaphor of this special stage for young people.

62 Enhancing your skills Structure analysis Focus on a comparison /
contrast essay Task 1 Identifying the structure of comparison / contrast Step 1 Read the following essay and discuss in pairs what structure is used in it. Step 2 Work in pairs and draw a map of structure of the essay.

63 Enhancing your skills Structure analysis Focus on a comparison /
contrast essay Mozart and Beethoven were the greatest composers of the 18th century. Even though they both were outstanding, they each had very different lives. Therefore, it is interesting to compare their musical education and working styles. Obviously, these two composers experienced differences in their musical education. Mozart’s family was musical. His father was a good violinist. At an early age, Mozart could remember tunes and recognize easy musical notes. He started composing at age 5 and performing at age 6. Although Beethoven was also born into a musical family, his music education began later in his childhood. He was first taught to play the organ (风琴) and started performing at age 8. Not until age 13 was his first composition published.

64 Enhancing your skills Structure analysis Focus on a comparison /
contrast essay The two men’s working styles were even more different than their education. When Mozart started to write a piece of music, the composition was already finished in his mind, so he could write it out in elegant handwriting just in one go. By contrast, Beethoven tended to doubt about what he wrote. He started writing before he finished the composition and then glued corrections onto the page. In one place he did it 9 times. When the corrections were peeled, the last version proved to be identical to the first one. In conclusion, Mozart and Beethoven had different musical education and working styles. Both of them will remain among the greatest of the 18th century.

65 Enhancing your skills Structure analysis Focus on a comparison /

Para. 3 describes what young people used to do after college previously. Para. 4 presents the image of young people today. Para. 5 compares young people’s concept of adulthood in the past and present. In other words, people in different generations hold different views toward adulthood. Para. 6 and Para. 7 are in comparison, talking respectively about young people and their parents in the odyssey years.

contrast essay 2) What transitional words or expressions are used to help the comparison / contrast? Para. 4: equivalent, different, similarly Para. 5: People who were born prior to … But … not remain static. Today, … Para. 7: likewise

73 Enhancing your skills Structure analysis Focus on a comparison /
contrast essay Guidelines to write a comparison / contrast essay: Points to select: There are always many aspects to compare or contrast. For a college essay about 200 words, it’s best to restrict the points of comparison to two or three. Thesis statement: It is of primary importance to state clearly your views or the points that you are comparing / contrasting for your reader to identify your views easily.

74 Enhancing your skills Structure analysis Focus on a comparison /
contrast essay 3. Patterns of organization: There are two patterns to organize the details in a comparison / contrast essay: point-by-point and subject-by-subject. Both are very useful, but point-by-point is useful for organizing more complex topics. 4. Coherence: Transitional expressions or structure words give writing coherence; that is, they help to move smoothly from one idea to the next. In addition, a variety of transitions add interest to an essay.
