What is an SSHP? Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy Educate members about career options in acute and ambulatory settings Prepare students for residency programs Career development Professional development Networking Promote research Encourage proper use of medicines in the general public Promote participation in service activities throughout the community Student Societies of Health-System Pharmacy (or SSHP) is a general term used to describe student organizations that represent hospital and health-system practice.  SSHPs educate student members about careers options in hospitals and health-system pharmacy, provide opportunities for professional development and networking by working closely with the local, state, and national affiliate. Okay…so who is ASHP?

Hospitals Ambulatory Clinics ASHP is an over 40,000-member national professional association that represents pharmacists who serve as patient care providers in acute and ambulatory settings. In Central Ohio, we are lucky enough to work closely with OSHP (state affiliate; Ohio Society of Health System Pharmacists) and COSHP (local affiliate, Central Ohio Society of Health Systems Pharmacists)

OSHP is a chapter of ASHP, SSHP is a chapter of OSHP. However, we as SSHP are not a chapter of ASHP directly. ASHP has a relationship with SSHPs indirectly through their state affiliates and directly via the ASHP-SSHP Recognition program. This recognition is represented by the dotted arrow. affiliation

8 Clinical Skills Competition
Team-based competition Written case, oral presentation Open to P1-P4 students 3 Rounds Preliminary (school-level) Semi-final (state level) Final (national level) Winning Preliminary-Round Team Participate in Semi-Final Round CSC Complimentary MCM registration Compete for trophies, $$ Practice Clinical Skills Competition: 9/7/16 at 6pm Clinical Skills Competition: 9/28/16 starting at 5pm If interested, please me at by 9/23/16. Sign-up alone (& we will pair you with someone) or sign-up as a team. Food is provided at both events! Students participate in teams of two and one copy of the case is presented to each pair. The team has two hours to complete a written patient-care plan using drug information references (lexicomp + references provided by SSHP). Each team then gives an oral presentation to justify their patient-care plan; 2 minutes for the presentation and 8 minutes for questions from the judges. The Clinical Skills Competition is open to P1-P4 students. The winning team from each school will receive complimentary registration to the Midyear Clinical Meeting and the chance to compete at the Clinical Skills Competition State Semi-Final Round. The top 10 finalists advance to the Final Round and the winners are announced at the Student Reception on Sunday evening of the MCM.

10 Midyear to Match Series & Residency 101
We offer various events to give students opportunities to learn about residency programs. We offer a series of Midyear to Match events- the events this fall include Residency Basics and Navigating Midyear. Residency 101 is in the spring and is an all encompassing event about residency.

12 ASHP Midyear REIMBURSEMENT
If you are going to Midyear this year and want to get reimbursed: Must be a registered and paid member of SSHP by September 2nd, 2016 (last day of membership drive) *NO EXCEPTIONS* Must submit CV to SSHP CV Review Must attend one of the following: Residency 101 (Spring 2015) Clinical Skills Competition (9/28/16) Mock Residency Interviews (reserved for P4s) Must send conference confirmation/receipt to Sarah Sakai by December 15, 2016, along with events completed.

13 Become a Member! 8/24- 9/2 Membership Drive: TODAY through September 2nd during professional hour outside of student lounge P2 students can pick up their pre-ordered drug cards (will announce their arrival) Selling water bottles and quarter zips! If you are planning on going to Midyear and getting the student pricing, you MUST register this fall membership drive!

15 Future of Residency Training…
ASHP Position Statement #0701 Requirement for Residency “To support the position that by the year 2020, the completion of an ASHP-accredited postgraduate year-one residency should be a requirement for all new college of pharmacy graduates who will be providing direct patient care.” While residency training is currently still optional, that may not be the case in the future. ASHP has an official statement supporting the position that by the year 2020, all new college of pharmacy graduates who will be providing direct patient care be required to complete a PGY-1 residency.
