Contractor Site Safety Orientation

2. SFU Safety Policy
The safety of all members of the university community as well as visitors to campus is a major concern of the university. It is therefore, the policy of the university to:
Protect the safety of all faculty, staff, students & visitors (contractors & sub contractors) against unsafe conditions and occupational hazards;
Formulate and carry out continuing effective safety programs appropriate to university operations;
Give priority to a safe work environment in the planning, direction and implementation of university activities; and
Comply with relevant statutes, regulations and standards of regulatory authorities representing occupational health and safety.

Prime Contractor
Continuing Service Contractor
Project Contractor

4. Prime Contractors Fully enclosed site Contractually site owners
Safety within the site is their responsibility
Perimeter must be maintained
Interface with university services must be coordinated with SFU

5. Continuing Service Contractors
Janitorial staff and Landscapers
Work and work risks remain the same
Annual orientation is required
SFU Safety policy updates distributed as required
SFU delegates the safety responsibility but accountability remains with SFU
SFU Safety advisors will monitor work periodically

6. Project Contractors Individual projects
Project orientation for each project and an annual orientation is required
Responsible for sub-contractors under their direction
SFU Safety policy updates distributed as required
SFU delegates the safety responsibility but accountability remains with SFU
SFU Safety advisors will monitor work periodically

7. University Expectations
Contractor must have a written safety program
WorkSafeBC (WCB) compliant
Workers must be trained in the assigned duties and familiar with regulations pertaining to the work being undertaken
Professionalism / harassment
Community Sensitive – news travels fast!
New & young worker training
Unsafe work practices are unacceptable and may result in the termination of the contract

8. What Every Contractor Needs to Know
Security is the first contact for emergencies

Security will meet and organize emergency response personnel as they arrive.

9. WorkSafeBC Matters (WCB)
All Asbestos NOPA’s must be copied to SFU EH&S Department fax #
Where the Contractor is required to Notify WorkSafeBC the SFU Project Manager must be copied
Any written communication from WorkSafeBC must be copied to the SFU Project Manager
Includes: certification by a P.ENG, written orders, variance order, etc.

10. Site Hazards Asbestos Biological, Radiation, Magnetic fields

Fall protection
Contractors who will be working at heights are required complete and submit
their Fall Protection Plan to the EH&S department
Pest control report to the Facilities Service, Service
Air intake locations

Fall Protection - EH&S ensures that it is complete and has been tailored to the work being conducted at SFU.

11. Site Protocols Traffic Disruptions - need 1 week notice
Parking requirements
Weight restricted areas
Smoking designated areas
WHMIS
Electrical lock out/permits
Hot Work Permits
May be obtained at Facilities Services from the EH&S Advisor with a reasonable notice period. Hot Work refers to any activity with an open flame or spark generating potential.

12. Site Protocols Confined space entry Cutting & Coring
Prior to entering, the contractor is required to submit a
copy of the risk/hazard assessment and
permit (onsite documentation) to the EH&S department.
The purpose of this is to ensure that the contractor has in fact gone through the processes required by WorkSafeBC

Contact security if you set off an alarm
Elevator breakdown call or ring for help and stay put

13. Electrical Department Authorization is required for the following:
Accessing electrical rooms
Power connections to the University's electrical system
Temporary power connections
Working on energized panels and circuits
All fire alarm related activities including capping of smoke detectors must be coordinated with the electrical department

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials

16. Ultraviolet Light
Ultraviolet light is mostly invisible but we can sometimes see a bit of the visible portion which looks like a purple glow

17. Antennas and Dishes
Do not stand directly in front of antennas or dishes

18. X - Ray
X- Rays are high energy particles that can cause damage to the body depending on time, distance, and shielding.

This sign indicates that lasers are in use. Skin and eye exposure to direct or scattered radiation should be avoided.

This sign guarantees that there are no biohazards or radioactive materials on the floor. If this sign is displayed only wet mop the floor.

25. No Janitorial Service
Many labs will have a DO NOT ENTER sign. When you see this, do not enter.
