1 Chapter 1 – Regions of the World
Lesson 1 – World Regions

2 Geography Geography – the study of the Earth’s environment and how it shapes people’s lives and how Earth is shaped in turn by people’s activities Comes from Greek meaning “Earth writing” or “writing about Earth”

3 What is a Region? A region is an area with common features that set it apart from other areas Can be large (hemispheres) or small (school gymnasium as an exercise area) Can be divided into physical, climate, cultural, and political regions

4 Physical Region Regions defined by Earth’s natural environment
They often have common landforms, such as mountains or plains Continents are the biggest physical land region, but each continent can be split into many smaller regions

6 Climate Region Climate – the weather pattern that an rea has over a long period of time. This is different than daily weather! Tropical – Earth’s central part, near the equator, is hot and humid Poles – The North and South Pole is very cold and has persisting snow or ice Temperate – area between tropical and polar regions

9 Cultural Region Culture – the way of life of a group of people, including their daily habits, beliefs, and arts Cultural regions are determined by people and not geography Language, religion, and ethnic heritage make up cultural regions

10 Political Region Set up by governments
New Jersey is a political region

11 Regions Regions can overlap
Ex. The Chiapas (p ) is a cultural region, but it is a political region as well
