STEM Careers Raj N. VP of Engineering at Wavefront. Inc

2 Introduction - SELF First thing First: Call me Mr. N
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Currently Vice-President of Engineering at Wavefront, Inc My career Initially designed/built cement manufacturing machines Moved to making Computer Software

3 Introduction – SELF CONTD.
What do I do at work Find what software need to be built Allocate work to the Engineers and Follow up Make sure the software runs well in the Cloud Hiring Engineers Other Roles Find out from customers if they are happy with the Software Interacting with Sales and help sell the Software Why I love my Job Building a solution to a real world problem and seeing it is used

Wavefront Inc – Founded in 2013 Build software to monitor other computers What business problem does Wavefront solve? It is difficult to make sure computers/software is running fine. Why?

5 WHAT IS STEM? Science Technology Engineering Math
Stem is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

6 WHAT IS A STEM CAREER? Career is a series of related employment. It is not a job! Jobs that require a STEM related college education Why STEM Career? Needed everywhere: Tooth Brush and Tooth Paste Toaster Car Traffic Light Computer Pays better $$ than other jobs Estimated 1.2 million job openings in STEM-related fields by the year 2018

12 TYPE of STEM DEGREES Probably Over 400 College Degrees
In the field of Science Medical Sciences Physics Chemistry Biological Sciences Animal Sciences Plant Sciences Marine Sciences

13 TYPE of STEM DEGREES CONTD
In the field of Engineering Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Chemical Engineering Computer Engineering Aerospace Engineering Industrial Engineering Electronics and Communication Engineering

14 TYPE of STEM DEGREES CONTD
In the field of Technology Bio Medical Technology Nano Technology Material Technology Solar Energy Technology

15 TYPE of STEM DEGREES CONTD.
In the field of Math Foundations for many other science, technology and engineering fields Allows to build a model of real world problems

16 HOW TO CHOOSE A STEM DEGREE
Ask yourself which STEM field you like/passionate about? Don’t choose a field because it is popular/cool Remember by choosing a degree you are choosing a career So select one that you will be happy to do 30 years from now If you are not sure, Take your time in the first year in college to find out about the degrees Do the basic requirements in first/second year of college and then pick your degree Select a college/university that allows to change your degree

18 Example STEM CAREERS Science Technology Engineering Math Astronaut
Doctor Dentist Chemist Technology Biomedical Technologist Engineering Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, Chemical – Engineers Math Actuary Statistician Data Scientist

19 WHY ME? Why I choose a STEM career – Engineering
Pays well – does not matter in which country you are in US is a great country to live and studying Engineering allowed to find a job Allows for a stable job – unemployment is very very low
