2 Black Psychiatrists of America, Inc.
A professional medical association founded in 1969 to foster the science and progress of the medical specialty of psychiatry with special emphasis placed on meeting the mental health needs of ethnic minority groups, especially those in the African Diaspora, the poor, and oppressed.

3 MISSION The mission of the Black Psychiatrists of America is to address issues affecting the mental health of African-Americans and African people worldwide as well as to provide a forum of continuing education for those who provide psychiatric care to these population groups.

4 OBJECTIVES To improve the treatment, rehabilitation and care of the mentally ill and emotionally distressed with special emphasis on the particular needs of ethnic minority groups, the poor, and oppressed. To promote research and professional education in psychiatry vital to the mental health needs of ethnic minorities, the poor and oppressed. To make psychiatric knowledge available and promote information exchange to other health care professionals, as well as foster cooperation among those concerned with the medical, psychological, social, and legal aspects of mental health with special emphasis on ethnic minorities, the poor, and oppressed. To establish and support standards of care and quality assurance in the delivery of psychiatric services and facilities management. To develop and implement programs that work to eliminate racial and ethnic discrimination, prejudicial practices as well as make psychiatric knowledge available to the general public as well as health professionals.
