1 Managing the UK’s water
How the UK manages its supply of water: Transferring water from area of surplus to area of deficit. Build more reservoirs 9this involves flooding settlements and relocating people) Water transfer can cause a variety of issues: Dams and aqueducts are expensive It could affect wildlife Political issues- people might not want their water to be given to another country. The demand for water is different across the UK The north and west of the UK have high rainfall, which means there’s a good supply of water. South east and midlands have high population densities which means there’s a high demand for water. They are areas of water deficit (greater demand than supply) North and West are areas of water surplus. UK Reservoir- Case Study- Rutland Water Reservoir in the Middle East Filled with water from 2 rivers- River Welland and River Nene Economic Reservoir boosts the local economy Land flooded to create reservoir- farmers lost their livelihood Reducing demand for water Fixing leaky pipes Reducing amount of water used at home Having water meters installed Environmental Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Hundreds of species of birds live there Variety of habitats Social Lots of recreational activities Jobs created Educational visits for schools Two villages demolished to build reservoir
