1 Understanding the Constitution
The US Constitution balances the powers of the federal government among the legislative, executive, and judicial branch.

3 Sharing means caring The Federal System Divides Powers between the State and National government Powers of the National Government are called Delegated powers and include counterfeiting, Regulating a military and declaring war Power of the State government are Reserved powers and include Maintaining Schools and Marriage Laws Powers Shared by state and national governments are Concurrent powers and include taxation and providing for the welfare of citizens

When New or unexpected problems occur congress can use the elastic clause to solve the issue Congress has the power to make All laws necessary and proper to solve the issue It allows the constitution to be flexible in order to be carried out (REMEMBER THIS WHEN WE DISCUSS THE NATIONAL BANK!!!!!!!!!!)

5 Power to the People The Legislative BRANCH INCLUDES CONGRESS AND THEY MAKE THE LAWS FOR OUR COUNTRY There are 435 members of the house of representatives(serving 2 year terms) and representation is determined every 10 years To be a Representative you must be 25 years old, live in the state you represent and be a citizen of the United States for 7 years Each State has 2 senators that serve for 6 year terms and must be 30 years old, live in the state they represent, and be a citizen of the united states for 9 years

6 Time to pay the bills The Speaker of the House controls congress and is the leader of the MAJORITY party The Vice president is the president of senate but only gets a vote in a tie and if he is absent the president pro tempore becomes the leader of senate Congress begins sessiomn in the first week of January and works in committee to create and approve Bills to eventually become laws

7 Hail to the Chief The executive Branch enforces the laws and includes a president and vice president who must be 35 years old, a natural born citizen, and must live in the country for 14 years. A president serves a 4 year term and if he cannot complete his term the vice president takes over followed by a line of succession line of succession The House of Representatives can impeach the president for high crimes and misdemeanors and Senate tries the president in an impeachment case

8 Teamwork makes the dreamwork
The President and congress have to work together in order to pass laws But a president can veto laws of congress and congress can override the veto The president can also issue executive orders to enforce the constitution and can grant pardons from federal crimes The President commands the Military but only congress can declare war Presidents also negotiate treaties and carry out foreign relations but receive help from their appointed cabinet

9 Order in the court The Judicial branch is made up of all federal courts and is lead by the supreme court The supreme court can strike down unconstitutional laws at the state and national level and tries cases between the states The president makes appointments to the federal courts and they serve lifetime terms Lower federal courts or organized into 94 district courts and are divided by the cases in which they have jurisdiction

10 Justice Served If someone convicted of a crime received an unfair trial, they can take the case to one of 13 appeals courts The panel of Judges hears the case and makes the decision of if the trial was fair or not, if it is appealed it will go to the supreme court If the case is important enough, the supreme court can choose to hear it or uphold the decision of the appeals court There are NINE judges on the supreme court with no qualifications on who can be a judge. Thurgood Marshall Was the first African American Justice and Sandra Day O’Connor was the first female justice
