5 What is Master Data? Core business objects shared by applications across an enterprise Item Master Customer Master Vendor Master Employee Master Chart of Accounts Relatively static Not Order Master or Inventory Master Data worth managing

6 What is MDM Master Data Management Two main subsets
The processes and technology to produce and maintain a single clean copy of master data As much about governance and stewardship as technology Political issues often more difficult than technical issues Currently requires a lot of consulting help Two main subsets Customer Data Integration (CDI) Often generalized to party management Product Information Management (PIM)

7 What MDM Isn't MDM is not Metadata Management
We store and manage metadata about the master data but we aren’t a general purpose metadata repository MDM is not Taxonomy Management Master data entities and hierarchies look similar to taxonomies and it would probably be possible to build an MDM model to store taxonomies but we don’t have tool support for gathering and managing taxonomies MDM is not a Data Warehouse MDM data should be used as dimension data in a data warehouse but MDM has no facts MDM is not a Transactional Data store Master Data is used to produce transactional data but transactional data is not master data – Item Master is MDM, Inventory isn’t Taxonomy is the science of classification

8 Why MDM? SOA Mergers and Acquisitions
SOA can make a data cleanliness problem worse SOA is often seen as an integration solution Integrated access to non-integrated data is often worse than data silos With silos the duplicates and inconsistencies are at least hidden 6,000 top-level Boeing records Mergers and Acquisitions Multiple customer masters with inconsistent views of the same customers Incompatible ERP systems Multiple SKU’s for the same product Inconsistent specifications and prices for the same product RFID Consistent data source to tie to identifiers

9 Why MDM? Data Pools Single copy of product data required
Some retailers won’t pay invoices or stock products if data is inconsistent Item I2 List QAD List Difference 16” ICVF-125 $5,765.10 $7,565.10 $1,800 ½” B-6301 $223,525.15 $22.35 $223,502.80 008QT $400.35 $556.20 $155.85 909M1QT $20,716.95 $26,052.75 $5,335.80 777S $35.60 $126.30 $90.70

10 Governance & Compliance Concerns
International and domestic accounting standards and legislation are demanding more visibility, and transparency of systems Auditability is a must Can you track changes in master data? Do you know who made the changes? Do you know when changes occurred? Can you produce a dimension from Q2 last year? Most analytics tools use a single administrator Few if any have version control

14 Microsoft's Vision for MDM
Empower organizations to effectively and pervasively use critical data assets Provide an extensible application Encourage an MDM ecosystem Help people and systems integrate, contribute to and consume an authoritative source of master data Support direct and proactive data stewardship

15 Microsoft MDM Philosophy
Multi-domain hub Open interfaces Incremental implementation Distributed, Federated MDM Partner for domain specific solutions Use existing integration capabilities Tight integration with Microsoft Products Hierarchy Management is a critical capability Data Stewardship is a key success factor Analytical and Operational MDM are just two uses for the same data

16 Key Attributes of a Successful MDM Solution
Ubiquitous Enabled contextually Available everywhere Transparent Unobtrusive Surfaced to business users in tools Low Risk TTV Deploy at the departmental level Integrate at the corporate level Integrated Connected across applications Federated across instances
