14 Talking to Kids About Their Art
DO Ask them to tell you about their piece Comment on their use of art elements (color, line, shape, texture…) Acknowledge their work (intense, long, creative) Remember art is not about “right or wrong” DON’T Ask “What” Say “That’s Pretty” “Cool” Allow them to define the adjectives they are putting in their work Take over. You can always demonstrate a technique again on scrap paper if kids are stuck Encourage them to tell you a story about their subject if they say they are stuck Talking to Kids About Their Art

15 Students should remove excess paint on a paper towel and lay brush aside between steps
A resting brush should always be horizontal To keep bristles from crimping or fraying clean and wipe from the handle to the tip Clean brushes with soap and water, rinse until water runs clear, press out excess water with a paper towel Lay brushes horizontally to dry and store Brush Care 101: Brushes are new this year. Please bear with us while we review ways to keep them nice for years to come.

16 Lesson Tips: Use the dry erase board or dock camera
-Switch between slides and your drawing to demonstrate the lesson -Not being an artist is actually a plus, it will encourage students to understand this is a safe space for self expression -Don’t forget to break figures into lines Hand out and collect materials strategically -Keep busy hands from losing focus or misusing materials by making them available only during the intended step -Example, pass out black oil pastel for outline only when students have finished painting, collect promptly
