Psychology of Video Games
Classic and Modern Games Social Responsibility Escapism Designed to be highly addictive. When we get rewards for doing tasks, our brain equates the behavior with rewards. Kill monster, get points. Complete level, get happy music. Beat game. Feel satisfied. Modern games are huge, bigger than any individual player. Many games are designed so players have to join communities in order to accomplish anything. Video games are personalized and tested experiences designed to provide an escape from real life custom tailored to the person playing. Why not continue to leave reality? Motivation It all boils down to the golden star sticker. Simple rewards can help motivate us to engage in certain behaviors The business world is using our love for video games to curb us into doing what THEY want (buying more of their stuff). Why can’t we use our students’ love of video games to get them to do what WE want? (behave well in class, be engaged in our content, and increase their learning) Free PowerPoint Templates

Classroom Tools Classroom Management Formative Assessment ClassDojo
Track behaviors Message parents Socrative Give quizzes Short answer option Kahoot! Give quizzes Race to answer quickest Quizziz Give quizzes Individually paced ClassDojo Logo came from their site- I downloaded a media kit which contained it Kahoot Logo - Quizizz Logo - Keep in mind that although I’m showcasing different on-line tools to use for gamification of your classroom, it is NOT just about the tool. Just using one of these tools sporadically is not the push of this presentation. The push is changing your mindset on how you teach. Giving students instant feedback, making learning and engaging in your classroom content more like a game than a dreaded bore is what we’re about here. These tools are just a start, and you can use them as extensively as you desire. Teachers have taken their entire curriculum and made it into a game, where students start off on day one having an F, and starting at level 1. Throughout the quarter, semester, or year, the students gain points through doing activities which allow them to ‘level up’ to the next grade. Free PowerPoint Templates

What motivates your students?
The key to good rewards is they need to be something that the students will WANT to work for, but it won’t ‘break your bank.’ I had to adjust my reward system because too many students were earning the “prize box” reward, and I had stocked with stuff from the dollar store. $1 might not seem like much, but 5 students here, 10 students there, and before you know it I’m having to make $30-$40 runs to the dollar store once or twice a quarter. I also allow students to cash in unused restroom passes at the end of the quarter for bonus points. Therefore the Restroom pass reward also can double as extra credit. Free PowerPoint Templates
