10ème Congrès International Hispano-francophone de Médecine Maritime X CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL HISPANOFRANCOFONO DE MEDICINA MARÍTIMA, París 6 y 7 de Octubre 2016 IMHA RESEARCH GROUP MEETING AND WORKSHOP Tools to organise Data Bases: from the researchers experience to the practical i n IMHA Research” - Olaf Jensen, CMSS-SDU, Denmark & Imha research

2 IMHA Research Archives
"Know it- share it" The aim is to collect, store and share learning materials from maritime health meetings and conferences to be used for learning and research to support the IMHA motto : "Know it and share it". We hope that these archives can contribute to the production of "more and better research". The benefit is that those who cannot attend the meetings can follow the development and be updated. Further, those who want to study a specific subject may search and find older abstracts that were never published elsewhere and build new research based on these findings and hypotheses.

4 The Zotero litterature database
A continuous critical and evidence based learning is a core issue in clinical practice, research, teaching, publication and prevention activities. The Zotero Program is just one of many scientific literature management programs, that should be used for these purposes. Of course one can live without such a database but it helps a lot and can save a lot of time that could be used for more interesting issues. Not only that, but it helps to create better publications and knowledge. Without this program it can be very time consuming to publish a scientific article with the requested style for the references.

5 The Zotero litterature database
Further in daily practice when you want to collect and cite a few references for a specific evidence in a clinical colloquium and discussion, this program is excellent. Therefore we strongly recommend that all maritime health persons learn how to use this excellent tool in their daily maritime health practice of all different types. There are good online courses for self-instruction on how to use

6 The Zotero litterature database
In order to increase IMHAR´s collective scientific strength in the use of EBM we would like to give training sessions in every possible opportunity, IMHA Symposia, seminars and other types of meetings. The database is useful for personal purposes but especially also for collaborative aims. At the IMHAR meeting in Paris Oct 7th 2016 we will give an introduction to the program by showing how it can be used in the daily practice and discuss strength and weaknesses compared to other similar databases.

7 Evidence based approach
1. What do we know about the problem? 2. What do we know about the causes? 3. What do we know about effective solutions?

8 Evidence based approach

9 Sampson H, Thomas M. The social isolation of seafarers: causes, effects, and remedies. Int Marit Health. 2003;54(1-4):58-67. These areas have not traditionally been subject to systematic scrutiny and analysis. As such they are substantially under-researched and are often under-emphasised by policy makers and practitioners in the maritime sector.

10 Iversen RT. The mental health of seafarers. Int Marit Health
The data on suicides proves that the mental health of seafarers in many cases continues to be very poor and often fatal. It strongly demonstrates the need for everybody connected with the international maritime shipping industry to do something about it.

11 HIV/AIDS, health and wellbeing study among International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) seafarer affiliates. Int Marit Health. 2016;67(1):42-50. A number of health issues and information gaps remain unaddressed on board and pre-departure. Mental health is especially neglected but the needs emerge clearly. Seafarers believe that companies should provide programmes but also look to their unions for health information and services. The ITF has an important role to play in supporting affiliated unions in developing activities and in providing technical and strategic guidance.

12 Conclusions Mental health is a problem for seafarers 2. Descriptive-, casual- and intervention research is is needed 3. No good solutions exists 4. No information and training programs exists

13 Proposal A maritime health policy plan for the maritime setting adapted from the WHO model with review studies, surveys, causal studies of drop-out and for with intervention in maritime schools with long term follow-up

14 Proposal We suppose that maritime students are the most vulnerable with respect to the psycho-social climate on board. They can identify weaknesses in this psycho-social climate and so a good reason to start the cohort from the maritime schools and to add the learning modules directly there. This gives also the possibility to study the reasons for drop-out and so to help to minimise the drop out in the future.

16 A long term maritime mental health program
Add a mental health theme in IMHAR Plan a policy based study and intervention program Use the WHO mental health program model adapted to the maritime setting with examples The study base consists of maritime students from maritime schools

17 A long term mental health program - proposal
Exposure in psycho-social issues by questionnaires Health effects by health registers and questionnaires The intervention schools receive training in mental health with regular contact over many years

18 Organisation 1. New IMHAR theme: Mental Health descriptive- causal and Intervention 2. Advisory group: IMO, ILO, ITF/Trust 3. Steering group with representatives from all stakeholders

19 Activities 1. Descriptive-, causal- and intervention cohort study from maritime schools 2. Learning modules for schools and training centres are needed 3. International og national campaigns with homepage materials 4. Program for activation of all stakeholders 5. Emergency help call centre is needed

20 Mental health maritime schools cohort program

21

22 Comparative mental health cohort program

23

24 A long term maritime mental health program
4-7 countries involved for ex: Spain, France, Filippines, India. Each contributes with a Work packet and 1 school
