Articulate why civic participation is essential in a democracy; Express what good citizens /engaged community members should know, believe, and do; Imagine how our teaching may invigorated with a focus on educating our students to “do” democracy; and Be prepared to use interactive teaching strategies including discussion and carousel in their own class.

Actualizing Citizenship of Digital Natives Oriented around citizen input into government or formal public organizations, institutions and campaigns Rooted in responsibility and duty Channeled through membership in defined social groups Open to many forms of creative civic expression, from government to consumer politics to global activism Rooted in self-actualization through social expression Personal interests channeled through loosely tied networks “Civic Engagement through Digital Citizenship: Engaging youth in active, participatory citizenship through digital media”, Education Commission of the States, January, 2012
