Defining Ethics What does any of this have to do with me? Why should I care? NOT because ethics is a checklist to prevent bad behavior- it is not. Because ethics IS about summa bonum – the “highest good.” Because ethics is seeking the Good, the Right, and the Ought. Module 1

18 The Challenge of Ethical Decision Making
Dilemma Complex Situation Uncertain Choices Paradox Good vs. Good Bad vs. Bad Ethical Decision “An act has no ethical quality whatever unless it be chosen out of several all equally possible.” -William James ( ) American Philosopher Module 1

19 The Challenge of Ethical Decision Making
Ethical decision making is part of everything we do… For policing professionals, every interaction is an opportunity and a challenge to ethical decision making. With public trust, integrity, and liability constantly on the line, stressing police ethics as simply a means of discouraging bad behavior is wholly insufficient. Effective policing requires changing the concept of police ethics from merely an after-thought, to a controlling insight that informs and guides as an internal, personal capacity. Module 1

20 The Challenge of Ethical Decision Making
Ethical decision making is part of everything we do… Module 1

21 Defining “Controlling Insight”
Ethical Decision Making and Controlling Insight Defining “Controlling Insight” " 'Controlling Insights‘..…the kind of insights that are most useful are the ones that underpin, and that therefore control, every other factor. These insights give you leverage. They help you know which of your actions will have the most far reaching influence in virtually every situation." -Marcus Buckingham, 2005 The One Thing You Need to Know

22 Module 1 Summary & Review
