1 Expressive Eye Project
(D)  make judgments about the expressive properties such as content, meaning, message, and metaphor of artwork using art vocabulary accurately. D)  create original artwork to communicate thoughts, feelings, ideas, or impressions; Expressive Eye Project Students will create a work of art to express human emotion using their “eye” as inspiration. Artist/Art History Kathe Kollwitz, Expressionism Materials: Ebony pencil, colored pencils, sulfite paper. References/Handouts Kathe Kollwitz drawing, The Survivors, (internet) Teacher generated worksheets. Anticipatory Introduction: Students will view The Survivors by Expressionist Artist Kathe Kollwitz Divide students into small groups. Give each group a poster size paper and marker. Give students 5 minutes to discuss the drawing. Prompt students to list what they think the artist is trying to convey through expressions, particularly in the eyes. Vocabulary: contour line, Value, form, Expressionism Have groups share their ideas.

3 Eyes are one of the most Expressive features people have to convey emotions. This exercise will help you illustrate expressions to convey certain emotions.

4 Review Notes for drawing the eyes:
Basic shape of the eye is an almond. The iris is the colored part of the eye and covered by the eyelid. The pupil is black and circular Draw the highlights in the pupil before you shade in. Use value to create shadows in the eye. (Top, Bottom, corners) Layer values for shading around the eyes to create depth. Choose one of the Expressions to illustrate. Draw several thumbnail sketches for ideas for a major project. Investigate ideas and images to visually illustrate the Expression you will use for the project. Using pencil and ebony pencil begin drawing your composition lightly. Decide whether or not you will add color to your design. (Remember, Kathe thought color would be “too pretty.”
