Streetsbrook Infant & Early Years Academy Curriculum Overview for Parents  Nursery, Autumn Term 1 - It’s All About Me! Personal, Social and Emotional Development In PSED, the children will be developing confidence to talk about their experiences and themselves. They will try hard to share toys and take turns when playing with new friends. They will think about personal hygiene and remember to use the toilet and wash their hands after they have been to the toilet and before having snack. Physical Development During PE sessions, the children will move around the hall with safety and control, responding to signals and following simple instructions. They will join in with traditional circle games such as ‘ring a ring of roses’. When playing outdoors, they will use a variety of large climbing and balancing equipment. they will also take part in activities to develop fine motor skills such as tracing, lacing, threading and cutting. Expressive Arts and Design Creative activities will include exploring colour, printing using body parts (hands/feet) and using a pencil and paintbrush to draw and paint pictures of themselves. In music, they will join in with action songs and nursery rhymes and explore sounds we can make with our bodies. The children will also have fun using their imagination through dressing up and role-play in the Three Bears cottage. Communication & Language The Nursery children will take part in daily discussions, sharing their own ideas, news, likes and dislikes and know that it is important that they listen to what other people have to say too. They will play ‘name games’ to help them learn and remember the names of their new nursery friends and teachers. Understanding the World The Nursery children will explore our new nursery environment both indoors and outdoors, and think about the season of Autumn. They will talk about themselves, their homes and families and think about how they have grown and changed over time from a baby to a child. They will observe their own features using mirrors, and identify similarities and differences between themselves and others eg eye colour, hair etc. They will also enjoy exploring a range of ICT equipment, such as the interactive white board, digital camera and CD player. Literacy Literacy is so exciting because the Nursery children will be able to use a wide range of equipment to explore and make marks on paper such as pens, chalks, pastels, pencils! The teachers will read lots of stories and the children will be able to talk about the stories and pictures. Topic work will focus on familiar stories such as ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘Funnybones’. They will also be able to look at books in our very own nursery library. Maths During Maths activities, the children will sing number rhymes and songs, and practice counting a small set of objects. They will learn to recognise colours and 2D shapes – circle, triangle, square and rectangle. They will play games based on sorting and matching objects by size, such as the three bears chairs and porridge bowls! They will also explore capacity through water play – using a variety of different sized containers.
