1 EPICS Design Process

2 EPICS Design Process Project Identification Phase: Goal is to identify a specific, compelling need to be addressed

3 Project Identification
COMMON TASKS CURRICULUM Conduct needs assessment (if need not already defined) Identify stakeholders (customer, users, person maintaining project, etc.) Define basic stakeholder requirements (objectives or goals of projects and constraints) Determine time constraints of the project 1.1 Intro to Service Learning 1.2 Brainstorming Projects 1.3 Survey of Community 1.4 Code of Cooperation 1.5 Teaming Skills 1.6 Intro to Project Scenario 1.7 Prototype to Communicate 1.8 Proof of Concept 1.9 – 1.15 Additional Lessons 1.16 Gate

4 EPICS Design Process Specification Development Phase: Goal is to understand “what” is needed by understanding the context, stakeholders, requirements of the project, and why current solutions don’t meet need, and to develop measurable criteria in which design concepts can be evaluated.

5 Specification Development
COMMON TASKS CURRICULUM Understand and describe context (current situation and environment) Create stakeholder profiles Create mock-ups and simple prototypes: quick, low-cost, multiple cycles incorporating feedback Develop a task analysis and define how users will interact with project (user scenarios) Compare to benchmark products (prior art) Develop customer specifications and evaluation criteria; get project partner approval 2.1 Design the Prototype 2.2 Prototype to Communication 2.3 Testing Prototype 2.4 Specifications 2.5 Persona and Scenarios 2.6 Prior Art 2.7 Gate

6 EPICS Design Process Conceptual Design Phase: Goal is to expand the design space to include as many solutions as possible. Evaluate different approaches and selecting “best” one to move forward. Exploring “how”.

7 Conceptual Design CURRICULUM COMMON TASKS
Conduct Functional Decomposition Brainstorm several possible solutions Create prototypes of multiple concepts, get feedback from users, refine specifications Evaluate feasibility of potential solutions (proof-of-concept prototypes); select one to move forward Interaction with users 3.1 Brainstorming with Scamper 3.2 Multiple Prototype 3.3 Prototype to Communicate 3.4 Testing and Redesign 3.5 Modifying and Budget 3.6 Revisit and Gantt Chart 3.7 Gate

8 EPICS Design Process Detailed Design Phase: Goal is to design working prototype which meets functional specifications.

9 Detailed Design COMMON TASKS CURRICULUM 4.1 DFMEA 4.2 Field Testing
Design/analysis/evaluation of project, sub-modules and/or components (freeze interfaces) Complete DFMEA analysis of project Prototyping of project, sub-modules and/or components Field test prototype/usability testing 4.1 DFMEA 4.2 Field Testing 4.3 User’s Manual 4.4 Materials List 4.5 Demonstration with Stakeholders 4.6 Safety Analysis 4.7 Peer Evaluation 4.8 Gate

10 EPICS Design Process Delivery Phase Tasks: Goal is to refine detailed design so as to produce a product that is ready to be delivered! In addition, the goal is to develop user manuals and training materials.

11 Delivery 5.1 Design Review Preparation 5.2 Design Review COMMON TASKS
CURRICULUM Complete project Complete user manuals/training material Complete usability and reliability testing Complete delivery review 5.1 Design Review Preparation 5.2 Design Review
