Welcome to Back to School Night! Mrs. Jenner 6th grade Science Honors Room I-26 There is a sign-in sheet at the front of each section of desks. Please sign in, and pass the sheet and pen back. If you have not received s from me, then write in your address on the sheet  Thank you!

University of Redlands, M.A. Education [Counseling] Post Graduate Coursework through several universities in Teaching Strategies, Interventions, CLAD, and GATE Mom to 5 children ;)

4 Certifications and Experience:
CLAD Certified K-6 Multiple Subject Credentialed English K-9th grade Credentialed GATE Certified, former GATE site coordinator Credentialed Counselor, P.P.S. 21st year of teaching (I’ve taught 6th, 7th and 8th grades)

5 Communication: Webpages and Agendas
Students have been provided an Agenda to write down all homework, upcoming assessments, and important dates. The Agenda should be filled out each day at school. Please check my webpages each week for assignment updates and important announcements.

6 Communication: Emailed Gradebook
Grades and updates are ed to you each Friday. If you provided me an address on the parent letter, but you have not received a Progress Report from me, please check your spam/junk folder, and/or add your to the sign in sheet so I can check for an error.

7 Grading Periods in Middle School
In Middle School, we are on a Semester System. The first semester is made up of 1st and 2nd quarters and ends right before Winter Break. The second semester is made up of 3rd and 4th quarters and begins in January and ends in June at the end of the school year. There will be a report card for each quarter. Please know that the grading is cumulative by semester. The gradebook starts fresh again in January.

8 Rules and Expectations
Rules are posted in my room and clearly stated. Students need to come to class prepared: Please check with your child regularly regarding their supply needs. Gum is not allowed here at Cope. Homework needs to be completed and is the quickest way to help or hurt your child’s grade Water bottles are encouraged! Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated

9 Consequences of Not Following Rules:
Poor Performance in class and not a great deal of learning! Lunch Detention Time out in another classroom (Refocus)/ Parent Notified Loss of school privileges Administration/Counselor involvement

10 Supplies Lined paper Pencils (many!) Highlighters Index Cards (500)
RED pens for correcting Colored Pencils or Markers strongly encouraged Flash Drive (encouraged for classes) A Handheld Pencil Sharpener! Suggestion: Write your child’s name on everything! (last names!)

11 Work Expectations All work is to be completed in pencil (unless it is a special project) Students will be strongly encouraged to work in groups, partners, and teams Student’s work should be neat, thoughtful, and reflective. All papers should have the student’s first and last name, date and period at the top!

12 Depth and Complexity The Science Honors class will be using teaching strategies that focus on depth and complexity in learning. Your students will become familiar with the Icons of Depth and Complexity, and will begin to use these concepts in their thinking and responding.

13 LATE WORK Late work will only be accepted with a Late Pass stapled to the assignment. Each student receives 3 Late Passes from me per quarter, and I will accept 3 late assignments for full credit. No other Late Work will be accepted.

14 Science Our textbook is Focus on Earth Science by McDougal Littell. Each student has a textbook in class, and an online textbook at home. Students received a red Interactive Reader and a Standards Workbook. These books should remain in the student’s backpack. TEXTBOOK ONLINE

15 Science in Transition Our district is in a transition year where we are still teaching the older Science Standards while branching out into the Next Generation Science Standards. This means the students will focus on Earth Science, but will also study Physical and Life Sciences with exposure to engineering and design, labs, problem solving, and creating.

16 Assessments and Projects
Dates are posted ahead of time on my website All material needed to do well on the quizzes or tests are given to your child ahead of time, and will be posted to my webpage. If the student takes time to pay attention in class, complete assignments, actively participate and focus on the study guides, he or she should do very well!

17 Common Core Reading and Writing Strategies
We will focus on Reading Strategies within the Science curriculum Students need to be able to cite textual evidence to support claims and reasoning. Students will need to read material more than once for understanding and in order to process information with more depth and reflection. Students will be expected to write informative and explanatory texts that are discipline specific.

18 Ways for students to get help!
Visit my room before school to receive extra help me with questions! Re-read your notes Work with another student (not copying, actually getting help) ;) Our school library has printers if you run out of ink at home, and a few extra textbooks that can be used before and after school.
