3 BACKGROUND Energy Storage is considered the new wave in the energy sector. The international market growth for energy storage is expected to grow from $220m dollar in 2014 to $18bn in 2023. The storage capacity is expected to increase from 360MW to 14GW during the same period. Potential uses cases for Energy Storage in South Africa have been identified. South Africa owns a variety of mineral resources that could be beneficiated for energy storage applications/solutions.

4 ENERGY STORAGE OPTIONS
Power-to-Power: A process of converting electrical energy from a power network into a form that can be stored for converting back to electrical energy when needed with as low as possible energy losses due to inefficiencies. Power-to-Heat: A process where electricity is used to generate heat for consumption at a later time Power-to-Gas: A process where electricity is used to produce a gas such as hydrogen. The hydrogen can then be used as a fuel or to produce electricity at a later stage.

15 TECHNOLOGY The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), an independent U.S. Government foreign assistance agency sponsored an Energy Storage techno-economic assessment Parsons Inc., an architectural/engineering firm in the USA with experience in renewable energy and energy storage technologies, was appointed to perform the assessment. The team, which comprises experienced consultants from the US and SA, collaborated with the University of Stellenbosch and Gibb Engineering and Architecture as their local partners.

CURRENT STATUS The techno-economic study is in an advanced stage and outputs consist of the following: Technology assessment – Final review Economic assessment - Final review Financial assessment – In progress Developmental impact (high level) - Final review Environmental Impact assessment - Final review Legal and Regulatory assessment - Final review Proposed way forward - Final review There will be an official launch of the results once the final study report is received
